Why did the guy in the Neon and the Redline bother staying in it? They were both being left behind by bus lengths! Were they hoping a miracle would happen and they would come around for the win?

Sup. The 240 is my car, and that was the first time I ever had it out. There was no one around to race that night really, some guy in a supercharged blow through carb'd foxbody backed out, and the guy in the SRT4 was a real good sport.
