depending on how much you wanna stay smog legal in cali that will determine how far you can go with some mods.
if you want 442rwhp thats gonna take a full bolt on car and a nice heads and came package and it aint cheap . if your talking about 442 crank hp then it will still take a nice bolt on list and cam at least.
good luck though, theres no better feeling then modding your car

It all depends on what you want to do with your car? Do you want to drag race, autocross, open track/road race? Do you want a car that handles curvey canyon roads? Or just a car to impress your friends driving around town?
All of these things have different requirements and different priority in you mod/buck.
If you are just after some quick and easy power, go with an aftermarket lid (If I had to do it over again, I'd get the Texas Speed&Performance one)and a filter (K&N or holley). A cat-back exhaust would also be easy. Next would be headers (though in California, these would be a problem when smog test time comes around as they are illegal). Then a new cam and ported heads. This would have you over 400rwhp if the cam was aggressive enough.
If you want to drive windy roads or tracks, better brakes will be needed. While upgrading to a better brake system is best. The cheapest and easiest thing is to get better brake pads. After the stock rotors warp (and they tend to do so) get some cheap rotors from autozone or spend more if you want (it won't improve things by much). Avoid drilled rotors if you desire performance as holes only help some wet braking and they tend to crack around the holes (though they do look nice). Sub-frame connectors should be added to stiffen the frame (stops squeeks and rattles too). What you do after this depends on what the car will be used for.
If you drag race and have an automatic, get a torque converter for better launching. Sticker tires help. Eventually getting a 12-bolt rear end might be desired as the rear-ends tend to brake on hard lauching.

yeah i have to agree night and day diffrence if you get it to breath better.
texas speed perfomance air box lid
good air filter
defintly reccoment the fast toys ram air kit
the intake stuff you will notice more of higher rpm pull.
a good set of headers and y pipe will do wonders for the entire powerband. im really impressed with the mac midlength headders and y pipe kit from fast toys.
but if you have the t-56 manual tranny, my suggestion would be get a skip sift elimanotor its well worth the $30 from summet even better for the 50cents for the right componets from radio shack

Re: what should i do 1st to my car?
Lid, SSRA, muffler or catback.
Those are what most are recommending and I agree 100% but let me add one more,
Drag radials for the back. There is no substitute for traction. Nitto 555r is a good choice for streetable tire that works well at the track when/if you need them to.
Good luck and welcome aboard

If you have an M6 I would say go with a shift first. Or even just a short stick. When you put it on youll see why. The from there go lid filter free mods and cat back.

before anything tighten up the body
subframe connectors,strut towaer brace.
once you get those out of the way, then I would
recomend:
intake lid
cat back exhaust
MAF sensor
headers
throttle Body
that should wake the car up nicely for a respectable price
traction is a given
M/T ET STREET
good luck
