Question Descreening MAF question?

I want to descreen my MAF to maybe gain a little horsepower, but im wondering if I will have any complications after removing screen? and if it will be worth it after removing it? all I have to do is push it out right?

thnx

Pop that bad boy out. I have an 85mm slp maf right now, and it and my stock maf were both descreened. I don't know how much power it will give, but I think it's worth for a couple hp. And btw, my car hasn't had any complications so far.

na man you wont have any problems. the only reason for the screen is 2 keep big **** out like bugs and trash. as long as your driving habbits dont lean twrds that you shold have no problems. and your gains should be around 3 or 4 hp

personally I dont think 3-4hp is worth leaving a big hole up to your engine. You wont feel 3-4 hp, so why bother? I get junk on the screen to my maf, so where is this going in your engine?

The screen isn't to stop items from getting to the engine, that is why we have air filters. The screen from what I have read, is to evenly distribute air over the maf sensors ... this is a long, and beaten to death subject. It won't hurt if you descreen it, but most say it doesn't help.

i thought de screening you maf will screw up the way the maf will read the airflow ? the maf was made to work with the screen, so i would leave it alone. there are other areas where you can get 5hp. cut off your cats and sell them. there is a mod that will make you money and hp. (but will not help you when emission time comes)

yes the screen is used to evenly distribute air thru the MAF. helps with a more accurated reading

When people say they havent seen complications I am not surprised. It is not like descreening the MAF will suddenly make your car sputter and die, but everything in a car(for the most part) serves a purpose and it would be good to research it a lot before you do anything to avoid even minute problemos.

I have 2.73s, and my car gets damn near 30mpgs on the highway. The fact that it has no cats doesn't help, but oh well. I know I have already said this, but I still say de-screen it.

If this helps, I just read that the maf I have now which is an slp 85mm, flows 895cfm with the screen in and is capable of flowing over 1000cfm with it out, but de-screening is not recommended for street use. I know that's not the maf you have, but hopefully that helps a little.

Mine is descreened and self ported. Like alot of people have said above, descreen it. My 99 TA has been descreened for quite a while and and has 147k on the motor, you'll be fine.

I descreened and ported mine at the same time, and the next time I ran the car it was misfiring at high rpm's. I would blame that on the porting and not the descreening of the MAF, but the next stock MAF that I bought I ended up leaving the screen in just for good measure.
