Default Why are there flames from the exhaust?

Hi,

A friend of mine tells me his LS1 keeps kicking out flames from the exhaust tips.
I guess this is unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust system.

What would cause this, and is it a bad thing?
He has LT, true duals (through stock catback I think!??) 1:8 Roller rockers, ! Cats and a tune on his M6 98 LS1.

Thanks for the info............

Nope: not compatable. True duals can not go through a single stock muffler/cat back.

Any flames must be unburnt fuel. He needs to find out why there is that much unburnt fuel. Is an injector stuck open? Does his aftermarket tune match his real setup or his dream setup?

That's what I thought!!

I know he's planning heads & cam, I guess his tune is off for his current set up.
Slightly worrying, as I was planning to have my car tuned by the same guy that done his. I must say his car does shift very well.......

I'll surgest mabey he has trouble with an injector.

Thanks for the advise 91RS383

He said the flames pop out when he lets off after WOT.

My guess is it's silly rich too, must have bad mpg.

Shame, he seems one of the few people around here to have lots of tuning gear for the LS1, but I think I'll have to give it a miss though!!

They must of been playing with the A/F ratios, but for a mild bolt on car, I guess it's a bad thing to 'play' around with.

A lot of cars with dumped TD's will spit flames from time to time. Both mine and my friends cars do it quite often, he is on a stock tune and I'm running at about 12.9-13.0 afr

LT's, TD's, !cats = flames.

New (front) O2 sensors might help, though. Probably not.

Fccs- you have a diferent setup (ORY and cutouts): What you see is the throttle blade closing faster than the injectors shut down. You're still pumping fuel into the motor but the air has slowed down. The mixture richens to the point that unburnt fuel exits the exhaust. It's still very hot and when it hits the O2 in the atmosphere it burns.

A car with cats should burn this off unless it's a great deal of fuel.
