I have decided to swap a V8 into my 96 3.8 in late spring 2010. I was originally going to do an LT1 swap but after further investigation an LS1 swap would not be to much more work. Will the 98+ instrument cluster work on a pregen? The LS1 mileage would be digital and the old cluster wasnt. I just want to know what it would take to get that working once the LS1 is in.

It's not plug and play. it can be done with some work depending on what you swap engine harness/PCM is. if it's a '98 engine harness/pcm, it can be made to work easier than if it's a '99-02.
However, I ran my stock LT1 cluster in my Camaro when I did my swap and the only thing was that the RPM's showed 1/2 ('cos the ls1 uses a signal similar to a 4cyl engine) and the fuel gage was off due to the '98 sending unit in the tank. Everything else was good to go without much fuss (maybe just swapping a couple wires on connectors/etc.) Def not plug and play, but if you have some knowledge in wiring and have the diagrams, it's pretty straight forward.
