Default Is mobil 1 5W20 ok?

I was reading in my owners manual ('02 SS) and it suggested 5w-20 oil. I'm about to change my oil and I wanted to make sure it would be fine. BTW, I live in Florida. Also, how many quarts of oil does my LS1 hold? Thanks guys.

I read in a thread a while ago that someone was saying you can get up to like 10,000 miles on synthetic and that oil analysis concludes that oil doesn't show signs of needing to be changed until around that mileage. Anyone know if this is true? Any links to "oil analysis?"

you dont usually change syntheic because it goes bad every 3-4k you change it so you dont have all the metal shavings and tiny particals circulating in the engine.

the main reasonyou change oil is no because of metal shavings its just the oil gets broken down by gas any condensation etc...i use Royal Purple 5w-30 5 and a half quarts...

Royal Purple is not good oil and would not recommend it. AMSoil and Redline are the best oils period, Mobil 1 synthetic is very good but still their 5w-30 is a bit thin so with the cold weather we have in chicago I use Mobil 1 0w-40 gives faster starting time and better lubrication on cold starts. The only difference between 5w30 and 10w30 is the viscosity at cold temperature and has relatively no affect once the engine is at running temp. Their was a guy on here "patman" and he knows alot about oil and would probley agree with what i'm saying.

yes their was a oil study done on LS1 engines that showed Mobil 1 synthetic can go 11,000miles. AMSoil claims their oil can go 25,000 miles with one filter change. However i'm quite content with changing my Mobil 1 or AMSoil at 5,000 miles, their radical tests results just give me pieace of mind.

And also don't forget that AMSoil Redline and Mobil 1 are really the only synthetic oils widely available. All other Castrol pennzoil quaker state are just dino based group III oils meaning they are just modified versions of regular oil, this makes Mobil 1 a great value.

Mobil 1 does not make a 5w20, they make a 0w20 though and it's very good but not for the LS1. It works very well in new Hondas and Mazdas though.

The 02 SS wants 5W20? My 98 TA wants 5W30, which is what I give it. Patman's posts on oil are a must read.

I typo'd the 20. I meant to say 5W-30.

I like and use Mobil 1 5w-30. I would not use Royal Purple at all.
