Ok, basically, i am leaving for the navy and I will be back in 4 months. I will have a chunk of change when i am back. I just sold my eclipse turbo, and i am intersted in an F-body LS1. I have been reading on this site for sometime now, you guys are information gurus.
well without further dues, my question is : I want a 2001/2002 LS1. But i want to get one that had the most advantages, meaning, I have been hearing that certain ones had the ls6 intakes, and others had like a "light weigh" option, and so forth. so i want to know what's the ideal ls1 to buy and how do i check to make sure that the car has the options that i am going to look for??? I hope i made sense! Thanks in advace everyone

All 2001/2002 LS1 motors came with the LS6 intake manifold. As far as a light weight option, the only cars I can think of would be the Firebird Formula and the Z28.

Definitely an '01-'02, by the time you get back they
will have slid down the depreciation a bit more and
the whole no EGR, common hardware, etc. are bonus.
Get the cleanest, tightest, un-buggeredest semi-
virgin you can afford. And if she likes to have her top
pulled down, so much the better.

Mazzenger, that's the kind of info i was looking for. code and stuff like that. So getting a 2002 SS, won't serve me any better than getting a 01 Trans am Ws6 or a 2001 Z28??? Has one proved to put down better track numbers stock, or higher wheel HP stock than the other???

jrp, that was very helpfull man, now i think the best best is a 325 HP LS1, unless i can find one with the 345 HP option, which is probably rare as hell, am i right???

If you want to do a lot of mods, the SS or WS6 is going to be a waste of an extra 3 grand... That is unless you want the looks.

Really and truly when I was looking for a used car a lot of places had little to no difference in price on a `99 Z28 or a `99 SS. Maybe a couple hundred at most. Well worth it for wheels/tires and improved looks. A lot of dealers were going off a "book" value in which many didn't even list a SS opt.

so you guys are saying that if we had two cars side by side : 1) a 345HP 2002 ss, 2) a 310HP 2002 z28. And we do equal mods on them, like a lid, K&N, a borla, headers, nittos...basically the same beginner mods. both cars will perform exactly the same and they will put down the same exact power as they are getting modded??? sorry if i sound like a naive newb, but i just came out of the 4 banger turbo world...

In otherwords, if you are going to mod it anyway, just get a normal Formula/TA/Z28, because you will be putting your own mods on it that will be better performing and less expensive than the "mods" that come stock on WS6's/SS's.
... unless you want the *look* of the ws6/ss's, in which case you might want to get those. Even then though I think it would still be cheaper to get a formula/ta/z28, put your own CAI/exhaust/ramair hood and it will be cheaper than the price increase you will get on adding the WS6/SS option to those cars. i hope that makes sense.

briantech, thanks a bunch, you answered my question perfectly. the only other and last issue i am not so sure about is : the suspension option that you get with the ss ( I think it's called an slp option 1Le, i could be wrong though) , is that worth it? does it make things better? i think it has like different shocks and springs...etc.

There are 3 options on suspension on a SS: 1) Standard, early years had different spring/shock combo as well as a bigger sway bar up front. 275/40 Z rated rubber on 17" wheels with revised bump stops. I think newer model Z28's (01+) got the same springs and shocks. 2) Y2Y options (SLP): bilstein shocks with stiffer springs beefier sway bars. 3) Y2Y options (SLP): 1LE adjustable shocks with even better springs and thicker sway bars. I think the reinforced lower control arms and harder rubber transmission mount were in there too.
(options 2 and 3 are worth it)
Wheels were 98-99 ZR1 standard with chrome optional; 00+ 10-spoke standard with chrome optional, chrome ZR1s still available.
98 have an Auburn diff or optional Torsion diff. 99+ had previous Torsion diff or optional Auburn diff.
Think that covers suspension/wheels/rearend.

It's going to be pretty hard to find a 1LE optioned SS and even one with the 345 package. If you do, and the dealer knows about the packages, more than likely, they are going to mark it up accordingly. Just save the money and go with your basic SS if you want a SS so bad. You're going to mod it, so the optional stuff it comes with will becoming null anyway.
