I brought a Lq4 last month with 317's heads and just saw this article in a Car Carft magazine I was wondering has anyone done this setup i would be happy to get anywhere near 500 hp let alone 580.

Are they talking flywheel horsepower?
I'd say it would be obtainable with a great set of heads, a FAST intake and a bigger cam.
I know on a stock block LQ4, you would want to get the compression up a lil higher.

I don't know the articles a little vague that's why i wanted to know if anyone's done this. I was thinking of getting ported Z06 heads a mild cam and the Edelbrock 29086 Manifold LS1 Victor Jr EFI w/ Fuel Rails. I read rave reviews about the Fast intake but there too expensive. Can you suggest a set of heads and cam combo I need the most bang for the buck thanks for the help

As far as a cam and heads combo...I am not the best person to ask, but I know a little bit.
From what I've heard from everyone, if you want the best heads out there get the Trickflow's...will cost ya $3,000 though.
I've got an LQ4 myself and personally I am just looking for a decent set of milled 243's with head work and upgrades.
The 243's are probably the best choice for the LQ4, because they will raise your compression quite a bit without having to spend alot of money. (LQ4 has low compression pistons)
As far as a camshaft...I went small myself (219/227 .614 lift), but if you want 600 horses you will probably at least need AT LEAST cam in the 240/240 range or higher with .6xx lift.
FAST 102 + big cam + an upgraded set of 243's will probably cost you at least $3500 before labor.

They have had a few LS articles in Car Craft, from what you're thinking bout doing, I'd check this one out.
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...s/viewall.html
All these figures are on engine dynos, that ZL-402's 580hp would be closer to 470rwhp.
RL350SS, what are your goals?

The only thing I would add is, many people argue that the 243's are better for the LQ4 than the L92's. Much needed compression & more low/mid RPM horsepower.
But the L92's are very good as well.
P.S. if you are happy with 470 RWHP, just go with the LS6 intake

I would agree, as all of the gains they had were above 4800 rpm, but it all depends on what you're doing. If it's a street motor that you need more low-end - mid-range power I'd go 243's. If it's more of a race motor with a 3000-3500+ converter and steep gears, I'd go L92/LS3s. However, you could always throw a set of LS2/LQ9 rods/pistons in the LQ4 and pick up compression.

I remember a little while back someone wrote into car craft asking about the same motor and they pretty much admitted that the motor they built was a great motor for bragging about big HP but would be pretty lousy on the street. I think that they suggested sending the stock 317's off to be cnc'd and milled and a smaller cam. Also the vic jr. is a great manifold if you can fit it under your hood, thats what keeps more people from using it, but I'm guessing your doing an engine swap into a non LS car.

The 317 castings have the same port shape and runner volume as the 243s.
The chamber volume is 71cc instead of 64. If you can afford to send your
heads to Advanced Inductions for their $1000 dollar cnc port work, valve job,
and PSI spring upgrade, they can mill say .030" to help get your compression
up to 10.25:1. (This is also with using thinner cometic gaskets). Then maybe
call EPS for a 230ish @.050 cam w/hardened pushrods and enjoy your 500 +
flywheel horsepower.

you can go to TSP and look at some PRC heads for a good price ,or check out vengeance racing for a good head/valve train pkg.you don't need to spend $3000 for a great set of heads to make 500rwhp.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys. Fry is this the article you where talking about its a 480 hp LQ4 http://www.carcraft.com/projectbuild...ock/index.html
Im sure gonna check out that Venegence website to see what they have im putting the engine in a 86 monte carlo ss with a 5inch cowl hood so i think that edlebrock efi setup should fit i just dont have much info on it as much as im dying to purchase one of those Fast intakes i cant do that right now. 937Z thanks for that carcraft heads article im looking it over right now. So what you guys are saying is its not even worth getting ork done to the 317's im better off getting 243's and have work to to them for a more street application. Again thanks for all the info
