Default 99 Corvette Oil Usage! Bad!

I just purchased my first LS1 99 Corvette. It has 101,000 miles and goes through oil like mad! I have installed a catch can and new pcv but with little help. The catch can fills up within 200 miles and I am currently using 1qt every 400 miles at best with mobil 1 synthetic. The engine runs strong just had an insane amount of smoke out the tailpipes and is just covering my white back bumper. Any Ideas on the next step?? Also what is normal oil pressure? My gauge tends to read low usually but no lower than 17 psi is the lowest I have ever seen. However I rarely see it above 40 psi when warm or 50 psi when cold. Seems like there isnt much there. I am very smart with the LT1 engine but this is all new. Any help?

Leaky valve stem seals, bad rings? Sounds like the dood before you gave this car a good beatin.

I'm no expert though.

I was kind of thinking that too but I went through the automatic transmission last week with a full service and it was pristine. It looked like the car had been babied since birth and its an original tranny. The previous owner is 85 and he bought it from his best friend who is 82 so im not sure how beat it could be. I am the third owner.

I also know that this thing is sucking some major oil through the pcv system. The throttle body is working as an oil pump. Rather than spend much to fix it I can be a new LS6 long block delivered to my door for less than 4k. Not sure what to do i guess.

Wish I could help more.

The other guys will be able to help though, but more than likely tomorrow. It's kinda late now.

An LS6 pvc system may help some. They were designed to improve this very situation. There was also a change in the PVC valve itself. The first ones had the valve that would open and close and these also contributed to oil consumption. If you shake it and it rattles old style. The new style has a fixed orifice. i have seen the first style get gunked up and stuck so the rattle test is not 100% reliable. Spend $7 and try a new one and go from there. Good Luck!

ls6 pcv swap, parts about $120. pressure is taken from valley cover instead of valve cover, should work.

Are you sure its not leaking anywhere? My 02 camaro was leaking about a quart every 400 miles. Previous owner replaced pcv hoses and oil pressure sending unit then gave up and sold me the car with 84000 miles. I replaced the rear main seal and rear main housing gasket as well as the new style pcv valve. It still has some very minor seepage around the pan but less than 1/4 of a quart of oil consumptoin in 5000 miles

Yeah, get the improved LS6 valley cover. May require some grinding on your block.
