Default replace oil after head gasket replacement?

Is it absolutely necessary, or just recommended? I recently changed my oil before noticing a coolant leak from the front of my driver side head. I'm in the process of replacing the gaskets and have cleaned out the cylinders and bolt holes of coolant the best I could with paper towels and compressed air.

Any time I crack in to an engine and I don't have to drain the oil, I will fire the car with the old oil and filter let it run for a min or 2 then shut it down drain the oil and change the filter.

I assume you are asking because you run synthetic and it is expensive to change the oil. However, it is potentially more expensive to run contaminated oil through your engine and possibly cause damage. spend the $40-50 and be sure.

Synthetic oil change = $40. Possibly damaging engine due to contaminated oil = priceless.

I can't believe how many corners people want to cut and how cheap they want to be.

o.p., its entirely up to you. I've used a shop vac, and compressed air with dampened rags after doing a top end. I ran it for a couple days, then changed the oil. You'll have a plethora of choices, like I said its up to you. Just my $.02

Get some Castrol Conventional and a new AC filter (CHEAP) run it for 100mi. Then change over to FULL SYNTHETIC and a Purolator or Wix filter.. Please see my drill instructors quote from below!

Answered my question. I'll run it for 100 miles, then replace the oil. I will be doing a coolant flush soon as well, so that should cover both ends of the spectrum. Thanks, guys.
