The Camaro was originally gonna be called Panther, but was then switched to Camaro which came from the french word Cameo which means friend. The Firebird was supposed to be called Banshee. But after finding out what the word meant they decided on Firebird. THe Firebird name was taking from the GM test cars of the fifties that were turbine powered. The Trans Am name was borrowed from the SCCA with a fee attached. Not sure why, the cars couldn't race in the Trans Am circuit because they were allowed a maximum motor size of 305 ci. and the Pontiac Trans Am had a 400.

So we could be driving Panthers, Banshees, and Mustangs!

Some say Camaro means 'friend'

Others will jest and say Camaro means 'small shrimp like creature'

But the rest of us know exactly what Camaro means

Thats why the 67 to 69 Z28s had 302ci motors in them . Pontiac had developed a 303ci all aluminum motor for the firebird but I don't think it ever went past the experimental stage though .

Nice follow up

Was there a fee for the IROC?

I never heard anything about the Iroc cars. I would say no because they used Camaros specifically for that race during those years (85-90). So it might of been a marketing and advertising thing. Not sure, just my theory.

I was thinking about something along these lines for the problem with the Canadian government if they do indeed bring the f-bodies back. Perhaps they could just go with the Oramac, obvious to what it is but inside the legal realm. Just a thought, nice info on the T/A. I owned a 455 T/A a few years ago and never knew about the fee.

This has been discussed about 455669778 times.

There is no legal reason not to use the Camaro name.

Sorry, I stopped keeping up with the posts dealing with that a few months ago. It was tiring to hear all the new theories. I just kinda liked the name Oramac, sounds like a Mortal Kombat character to me.
