Default Did I just get owned by a Trans Shop???

$1772 sound about right for R&R of T-56, bearing kit, synchro kit, and 3-4 forks update? :-(

They removed the trans, inspected it and said the clutch is gone, flywheel is burnt, bearings are screwed, synchros are bad and 3-4 forks need to be updated. They wanted $1060 for the flywheel and $540 for the clutch, which is not included in the $1772. I'm a bit ehhh perturbed.

Any help/info would be great... I'm in Orange County, CA if anyone knows someone who can help with this .

Thanks,
-Garrett

Wow.... I'd think it would be cheaper to just get a new transmission. Any way you can bring it to a different shop and get a second opinion?

I just got off the phone with Anaheim gear and they said they cant quote me anything because it was brought to them by a shop... so they said they charge 2100 for a core swap (which he said is what they are doing for 2070 or whatever...).

The crappy thing about it is, everyone and their mom uses Anaheim Gear cause everyone else sucks in this area. I'd even drive to freaking Utah if I had to save 500 bucks or something, 2 grand is obsurd for a stock trans. I just saw a fully built racing t-56 with CF synchros and the whole bit for 1600 bucks w/out core exchange. So I'm a bit fumed right now, needless to say.

I had to have my trans replaced after it went in December. I went with a Speed Inc. street T56. and a new GM clutch and flywheel. There was nothing left of the old trans, which I did not know until I had already paid to have it sent to Speed Inc. and they called to let me know. I had not seen the trans, but the input shaft was broken in two, their was no oil in it, and the whole front end was blown out. Needless to say...no core charge. Anyway, here is a breakdown of my total costs...

$2764 T56 Street
$750 GM Cluth & Flywheel + Labor
$140 Shipping on the old (Worthless) trans

Total: $3654

I'm EXTREMELY picky with my cars, and 3rd gear was grinding sometimes. They couldn't find the problem, so I took one of their mechanics out and speed shifted it a little and showed him, so they went and took it back to the shop, pulled it out, and sent it to the trans repair place. The trans repair place said it needs new bearings, updated 3-4 forks, and new synchro kit. The auto shop said the clutch is fried, and the flyhweel is burnt. I'll take pictures today of the clutch+flywheel and you guys can let me know what you think =/

Thanks for the help guys, I honestly appreciate it so much.

I figured I would post on this thread because I'm having tranny probs too. I was driving through some grass and there was something sticking up a couple inches out of the ground. I figured I had enough ground clearance so I straddled it and drove over it. Right as I was over it the ground dipped down about 4-5 inches and it slammed the hell out of my tranny (I think). It hit so hard that it shifted me to N and my LOW TRAC light came on for a few seconds. It still drives but has a rough and erratic idle and starts making a grinding sound at the higher RPM range of each gear and on the 1-2 shift. I didn't have time to get her checked out before I deployed to Iraq so I figured I would ask so I could get a general idea of what I have lying ahead of me when I come back. It's an A4 and I was wondering if I should just try and convert it over to an M6. Sorry about being so long winded, and I appreciate any help you guys can give.

I went to shops in Oxnard, Ventura and three told me 2 grand to rebuild the tranny and they said "but it wont hold up much, you drive a camaro and need an upgraded trans from the stock", two quoted me 3 grand to 4 grand for a trans that will last, is what they said. The other in Ventura said 4 grand for a top performance tranny which is what he recommended for the camaro, the other shop in Ventura quoted 3 grand or more depending on what they found inside the tranny. Then a shop in Oxnard first said 975 rebuild, then wanted to sell me a used tranny then I said no, so they then said they would install a tranny for 500 if I brought a tranny to them. I asked the other tranny shops how much for a tranny install one would not install the tranny, the others said 500 dollars.

Check out these transmissons great prices and warrenties are kick ***.

new zo6 clutch with flywheel and slave are around 500 I beleive from gmpartsdirect last time I heard. You can find a lower milage tranny for around 1000-1200. This is 1600 and you install. If you have ever done a clutch before should be no problem. Local shop around here charges 100 bucks just to take the tranny out.

If you pay that much, I hope you're getting a wet sloppy kiss when its over, cause that's a very expensive ******* imo.

An oem ZO6 clutch with flywheel is about 400-500, and a trans shop I spoke to said they rebuild them completely with this for about 1200-1500.

Good luck!
