Default Gas Mileage

Don't know if this is the right forum or not but.

I have a 2002 Z28 M6 with some bolt ons *headers* and 4.10 gears. My average fuel mileage is 22.1 MPG mostly cruising 60-65 MPH.

What gives??? Most LS1's with m6 get much better mileage.

Thanks.

That's not bad at all. You have 4.10 gears which don't help ya any either.

Those gears are killing your mileage...

You complain? I have stock everything except catback and lid. I get 18mpg (about 50/50 highway/street). I'd figure I'd get better but guess not.

leaning out your A/F might improve it a tad,
but 22 mpg in a 350 rwhp car is something old hotrodders would have killed for...

I have found that your gas mileage will be directly proportional to foot pressure applied to the gas pedal.

No wonder the on board data thingy in the vette always goes down to 9mpg when I drive. Other than that all the vettes I've driving start at about 20mpg around town stock and right at 30 highway before I take the wheel. Dont know how that compares to a F-body.

If any of you have low temp thermostats installed; remove them and reinstall your OEM t-stat. Engines become more efficient the hotter they run up to a point of diminishing returns. I would want mine to run as hot as possible just below the threshold of detonation. Oil temps also come into play to. Low temp thermostats used in the way they are promoted in the late model stuff, is more of a jerry-rig to fool some sensors. It's not proper tuning.

You're modding an already fast car into a real screamer....who really cares about gas mileage at that point? Performance doesn't mean good gas mileage anyway you cut it. I have a somewhat modded grand cherokee which gets about 12mpg if I'm gentle to it. I will be in Heaven with a somewhat modded z28 and getting 18-22 mpg...enjoy it!

Makes sense in a way. The hotter oil makes the engine run more smooth? hmmmmmm
