Default Engine shuts off during fishtail/burnout

My friend owns a '99 Camaro z28 and during fish tails or 360's the engine decides to turn off during the spin.

The rpm is below the rev limiter and no weird noises or codes are shown. Engine just dies, restarts fine.. Not low on gas either.

What could be causing this?

did you leave the traction control on? If you did then the engine cutouts out when you start to do a burnout or fishtail.

How do you get it to burnout w/ the TCS/ASR on?

ASR shouldnt cut it off, it will only stop it from spinning...bogging down.

Clogged fuel pump? The burnout could "suck the lines dry" causing the pressure to drop and the engine to die, then when you hit the key it primes the system again and starts fine. Easy to check/fix.

he has the ASR switch turned to the off position and a couple weeks ago had the fuel filter changed.

No gauges light up (no Check Engine light)

I'll ask him tomorrow about if the entire system powers off (radio/lights/etc)

i had that happen once, when pulling a 360 in a wet parking lot, after i let off the gas, about half way into the spin the car died as it came to a stop, im not sure why, but i figure it might have been due to it starting to roll backwards, or maybe it slowed down too much, but the converter didnt have time to unlock, i dunno. Oh, does he have an auto or manual? The power never went out on mine either, just engine died...

Oh, well. Never happened since!

How much fuel is in the tank when this happens? He could have a broken fuel tank baffle which lets gas flow away from the pickup when doing such manuvers <sp?>...just an idea though I havent seen the inside design of our tanks.

edit: oops just saw the not low on fuel

I'm curious now if it's just the engine is dying, or if it's the entire car shutting down (no electric power either).

If you mean tc as traction control I would say not likely at all. The whole idea of it is to help with traction during accell and slipage, shuting down the engine would be a hazard don't you think, I doubt it has the ablity to do that.

I also doubt the torque convertor would be locked anyways considering what type of driving is going on during a 360 in a parking lot ...? just a thought

when doing a burnout with the TC on, it will shut the car off. I've done burnouts several times with the TC on by accident, and it always shuts off.

Your car dies and you have to re-start it when TCS kicks in? When I forget to turn it off, my car just bogs down around 1100 rpms but it never dies on me.

All TCS can do is 1) retard timing 2) reduce throttle angle and 3) apply rear brake pressure, in that order. It is no way tied to killing the engine. Not saying that isnt what is causeing his problem...plus if he is doing 360's then most likely he has TCS turned off anyways so it should be disabled.

my car is cammed, so maybe that has something to do with it but whenever the tc boggs the car down during a burnout it stalls

when i was fishtailing and eventually crashed it, the engine shut off on mine as well, my friends old blazer would die if he did a burnout and let off without going anywhere

i think it has somthing to do with the imediated stopping of the tires, which stops the rear gear which stops the...... ect, and eventually stops the motor

re-read the 1st sentence, theres a message why not to fishtail, although mine was unintential and caused by hydroplaneing

no i was reffering to the torque converter, and I think i would be locked up because of the rpm the engine is pulling when you floor an auto in a parking lot, once passed 3K rpms it should be locked from what i understand. Mine happened when i let of the gas when doing a 360 in a somewhat wet parking lot, and the car came to an abrupt stop. I think the Torque Converter didn't have time to unlock and the engine stalled, somewhat similar to what happens in the same case when driving a manual and the clutch isn't pushed in in time... Thats just my educated guess. The electronics didn't die in this case on my car, because i had the radio on, and it took me a second to realize the car had died. Also, I had TCS off, cause I had planned on doing the 360!
