Default 99 Z28 Trip odometer reseting/battery not charging

I have a 99 z28 everytime I start the car especially when it is cold the guages go crazy and my trip odometer resets. Also the battery intermit. doesnt charge and/or runs dead like there is a short.

I have replaced the battery and alternator already.

Could if I have a bad BCM, Ground or maybe my spedo cluster is defective????

thanks
Josh

There's a TSB on the gauge clusters on the '99's doing that because of low voltage - double check the battery/connections/alt - that's what's causing the gauge sweep/speedo reset IMO. http://home.earthlink.net/~cetera/pics/aug99tsb.jpg Is it parts store alt? Friend of mine went through a couple before springing for a new GM unit.

I've had that issue since I picked up the car. Although I just got the car out of storage and put the first new battery in the car since it was brand new and so far the new battery has seemed to help. I only have about 250 miles on it since I got it out, but there have been some very cold starts (25-30 degrees) and its still keeping the trip odomoter.

Well, the voltage regulator is inside the alt. You can get the battery load tested, easy to do just to eliminate it as the problem. Another thing to look at is the exciter wire connection on the alt since it sounds like it might be an intermitent problem? Next step is have the alt tested. My friends didn't kill the battery completely, just didn't charge right.

Mine did that when it was single digit degrees or colder outside and it sat all night. I'm not worried about it. Also a 99 Z.

+1 for the florida guy...check your exciter wire first

Can this also be caused by Optima batteries. I remember reading on here before that using optima redtops can sometimes cause this. My car is a 99 also and it just started doing this same thing after i got it out of storage.

Check the side post connectors, leaking POS Delco batteries
(2 in a row) chewed mine up pretty good. Once the copper
gets chowed and crusty you can have all kind of electrical
fun. I disassembled, wire-wheeled and retinned mine but
buying a new one would save you some hours if it's as bad
as mine was.

What's this about ret-top optimas? I'm currently searching for the cause of a total loss of power in my SS and I use a red-top optima. I have it in my camry so that I can have it tested later.

Basically I pressed the start button and everything died: Interior lights, radio, exterior lights...

Could it be the cause of that?

(sorry for the hijack )
