Default running 89 octane instead of 87 in a SBC??

My daily driver is a '91 caprice with a 305 and always run 87. I found a few places where I go to school where 89 octane is 10 cents cheaper per gallon than 87 octane. I have to go back to the stations to see if either the 87 or 89 octane gas contains 10% ethanol which would mean a MPG difference.

If I use the 89 octane for few months while away at school then switch back to 87 when home in Chicago will it be bad for the car? Will the engine get adjusted to the 89 and then possibly run bad when it goes back to 87? Should I just pay the extra $$ and get 87? Thanks!!

read this for 87 vs 89 octane:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

read this for 10% ethanol:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol_fuel

read this for reformulated and oxygenated fuel economy:
http://www.epa.gov/orcdizux/rfgecon.htm

it doesn't matter what octane you use, as long as you get the minimum required. 10% ethanol shouldn't affect your gas mileage enough for you to notice.

maybe i'm the only one that doesn't notice the difference...i've driven this car for ~8yrs, now.

i get around 28mpg when i baby it and around 24mpg when i do the opposite. always have.

http://www.gassavers.org/garage/viewgaslog/1530 (<-- i just started keeping track)

indiana doesn't require e10 labels on gas pumps (i think all pumps are e10 - i don't remember when they changed). don't get me wrong, i don't support e10. i just don't experience problems with it.

well while i dont experience problems with it, it does kill gas mileage. alcohol is a less efficient fuel so it takes more of it to do what gasoline does. the effects of e85 are 10 times worse.

thanks for the replies! So I should not experience problems by switching between 87 and 89 all the time?

the old TBI motors like a little more base timing, use 89 and bump up the timing ~2*
