Default UPDATE P0420 & p0430(codes gone after repairs) Now P0054

I have read all the searched threads on these codes.

I think I know the answer to my questions, BUT...

I was about to get Kooks and the catted pipes, but I decided to sock away the money.

Now I found downstream O2 sensors, ACDelco for $44 a piece and since my car has 100,500 miles on it, I am sure they are at their end and need to be replaced.

So I am thinking the answer is just to buy the damn headers and sensors and call it done.

I just think it is weird that they threw at the same time.

Anyone else?

Well, I bought downstream O2s and hope to install them this weekend. I will let you know!

Well, I just crawled under the car last night and the weld before one of the cats was broke. I am pulling the exhaust anyway today, so I am going to weld that up, install an xpipe and flows, so we will see.

Those 2 codes trigger when the cats have lost efficiency in oxygen storing ability

( the PCM induces a fueling transition at idle and measures the rear O2 response time wrt to the front O2, if it's too short the test is failed and the code is triggered )

new rear O2 sensors won't fix those codes (regardless of whether you do or do not need new rear O2's).

Well, I welded up the cat, installed the new O2s and it sounds SO much better than before.

Now time to get new cats or headers and cats.....

....anyone got a part# for cats?

Have the codes gone away...?

Do you want OEM style replacement cats or header style cats...?

MagnaFlow has both kinds; do you need to pass smog test...?

Still codes, but not too many miles yet.

One cat was bad.

I was just looking for a replacement for what I have; brand insignificant.

I can weld, so just need the cats.

I always want to pass emissions and have to.

Magnaflow did not show a list for a V.

what does the code p0420 mean? is that the cat, because i just threw that the other day. It comes on and off though. Usually when i fill up completely, it will be on for a bit, then it will go away, but as soon as i get to 1/4 tank of gas it lights back up again.

By reading that article, it means the left cat is bad? Couldnt a faulty O2 sensor cause the same thing to happen?

When I pulled it down and looked in the inlet side it was pretty beat up. I am looking at getting two new aftermarket cats as we speak.....any suggestions. I have already picked a few out, but any suggestions good or bad would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys and gals!

No, a faulty O2 sensor will throw a different DTC.

The PCM measures the response time of the fueling transition (mentioned in that link) at the rear O2 relative to the front O2, if either O2 is faulty (shows no response) then the test either passes with flying colors (rear O2 doesn't transition) or can't be run (front O2 doesn't transition).

Update!

Never actually checked the codes after the fix, just noted that the light was on. Bad 54!

Anyways, this weekend I finally had a chance to install the SLP HF cat that I bought.

I went to clear the codes and they were not there; instead there was only one code and it was new: P0054.

I had cleared the others before I welded up the cat previously and installed the new rear O2s.

So my guess is that this code came up after I made the repairs to the old cat but before I installed the new cat.

Now, when I installed the new cat this weekend, I cleared the codes, and disconnected the battery for about an hour.

What is weird is that this new code is for a faulty O2 sensor, which happen to be new.

With that said, they have been in and out a few times, but I am only getting it on the left side and.

I have put about 230 miles on it with no code and it popped back up this morning on the way to work.

I guess I am going to try to replace the O2?

Edit:

Found these:

* P0030 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) Heater Control Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1
* P0031 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1
* P0032 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1
* P0036 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Control Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2
* P0037 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2
* P0038 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2
* P0050 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit Bank 2 Sensor 1
* P0051 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit Low Voltage Bank 2 Sensor 1
* P0052 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit High Voltage Bank 2 Sensor 1
* P0053 - HO2S Heater Resistance Bank 1 Sensor 1 (PCM)
* P0054 - HO2S Heater Resistance Bank 1 Sensor 2 (PCM)
* P0056 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit Bank 2 Sensor 2
* P0057 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit Low Voltage Bank 2 Sensor 2
* P0058 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit High Voltage Bank 2 Sensor 2

Not sure why the resistance code was thrown but still looking for the fix. lol

Well, swapped sides and got the P0060, which is the same code opposite sides. Happy, but anxious.

Then that points to the sensor.
