Default HP Tuners & WIN 95

Is anyone running HP Tuners with Win 95? I just got my package and installed it on a Toshiba Tecra P166 running Win 95B. None of the aplications (editor, flash, scanner) will open. I get the box "This program has caused an illegal operation and will shut down". I can't even open the help file. I have no problems running LS1edit on this laptop with this OS.

Their site recommends a higher-CPU-speed
machine for logging (though I do OK w/ a 266)
and I expect you may run into comms problems
with the VCM Flash read and logging with that
dinosaur. My 100MHz Toshiba could not hang
with the high data rate.

They don't say it -won't- work with Win95 but
you may need updates for some background
support stuff they depend upon, that only comes
"natural" with Win98 & later, or sump'n.

You may be the new poster child for obsolete
equipment

A title I am only too happy to relinquish.

Well, my dinosaur equipment works just fine with A-tap and LS1edit. I don't plan on using their logger since I have A-tap. My problem is not running their programs slow. My problem is running their programs at all.

166? Sometimes you just have to give in, I dont even use my dual Ppro box anymore. Look at it this way, with something decent like say the 750mhz I was using I can start it, make changes, flash it and be out logging before yours boots up. You might want to at least try loading 98

This laptop has been a dedicated A-Tap/Edit laptop. Not used for anything else. Always worked fine for just that. I just saw where HP Tuners min Mem requirement is 64 meg. I only have 32. I guess I'll see if I can dig up some more Mem first. That is one reason I never upgraded the OS. Anything other than Win 95 used a lot more Men.

I would install 98 SE regardless. 32mb is sufficient to run the operating system as I am many many others have done the same. Now their application may be allocating more than the available ram you have available and this may require 64mb, but you won't notice too much of a difference in speed from 95 to 98 SE but you will see much improved stability. I would do a clean install of 98 instead of upgrading it as well.

hmmm... is this the HPTuners software that came on a CD or the update off the web site? Have you tried logging onto their web site and downloading the latest release?

ok yea that's the latest. It sounds like some of the libraries (maybe the VB runtime environment) on the laptop may be older than required by the software... during the install did it give you any messages about overwriting files?

Send an email to Keith@hptuners.com and he may be able to help (if it'll run on win95 ...)

No overwriting messages. Install went perfect. Their site mentions nothing about minimum OS. I posted the same thing on their forum. I'm about to go hit up some computer shops about adding more memory and see if that fixes it. I guess if I have to, I'll see about getting another laptop. I tried it on another laptop, a TI P166 running Win 95b with only 16 MB of memory and the errors when launching the programs were even worse.

Upgraded the laptop to 64 Meg mem.............still doesn't work. I guess I'll try installing Win98. If that's what it takes, HP Tuners should put that as a minimum requirement.

Installed Win98 and all seems to be working. Still no response from HP Tuners either. I understand these guys have day jobs, but when you are selling a $500 product, you should have some kind of support durring regular business hours.

There's actually some missing OLE interop stuff in Windows 95, that's handled through DCOM (even though that's an old spec for remote obj invocation, etc.) Try downloading DCOM here:

http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom95/dcom1_3.asp

Install, and try runnin the app again - I've seen several apps that wouldn't run on 95 without DCOM, that were spec'd for Win98 and above. Also make sure you're running a later MDAC (install after DCOM), at least 2.6. Not sure how they're handling data loggin, but that might be an issue as well.

I'm glad I'll be using my wifey's new laptop, it's an eMachines 6805 AMD 3200+ 64bit machine upgraded to 1GB of RAM

Well just give them about a day. I have posted questions on their forum and they always answer back that night or the next evening.

Microsoft doesn't even support Win95 anymore and they are discontinuing support for all previous OS' up to Win2K I believe. If Microsoft doesn't support it, why should anyone else? It's 10 years old.

Well, maybe my problem will keep someone else from else from going through what I did today. I see HP Tuners updated their Minimum Requirements on their web site to include Win98 or better.
