Default Anyone in York, Lancaster, Harrisburg, Balt. area

I have been posting on the External Engine forem about my situation. In short, I just installed Hooker LT headers, and NGK TR55 plugs. The car is running with open headers until I can get a Y pipe installed.

Air and EGR are hooked up and functional-
O2 simms are being used-
I checked, double checked the plugs and wires for security of fit-
I checked the snugness of the O2 simm wire plugs-
No simm wires are near any hot surfaces-

The car backfires, has a miss every 30 - 40 seconds that is momentary, and lacks power. I took it for a short hop...Got a flashing SES lite, which now remains on steady.

I just backed the car out of the garage...it backfired more, and then just quit running. After about 30 seconds or so I got the car started again and parked it in the driveway.

If you live in the area mentioned in the subject of this post, and have the capability to ATAP or use LS1 Edit in helping diagnose my problem, it would be greatly appreciated. I would expect to compensate you for your time and trouble. <img border="0" alt="[hail]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" />

Please, anyone, I need your help.
Thanks,
Mike

Well I am from York, but in Georgia now. You installed plugs and wires, so I would first make really sure that you have all the wires on the coil packs correctly and on the plugs. When I did mine I had a few that were not on perfectly.

The misfire is all that I could think of that would be causing your flashing SES light. Check that out and see if it helps.....George

I used anti sieze on the spark plug threads..if, by chance, a little got onto the spark end of a plug, could this cause my problem, or would it have "burned" off by now?

BTW, the backfire/afterfire/misfire occurs only on the drivers side. I did notice some "soot" around the flange of the header where it bolts to the head on that side. I used the stock bolts to bolt the headers up. If the bolts bottomed out, and there isn't a tight seal there, could this be causing the problem too?

some cars run bad on open headers because the O2 sensor is too close to the end of the collector and a bit of outside air mixes with the sensor.

Jason, when can we get together to check out the car? I live outside of Dover, and am available anytime this weekend, if it suits you.

Hey Mike...I think ragtop is right ...that is most likely your problem. I don't have autotap or ls1edit but I do have a scanner so we could check your codes...I live in York.

I reinstalled the older plugs, and switched the O2 extensions (left and right). This morning Jason came over with a scanning device to check what codes were set off initially, and to clear them. Codes P0134 and P0300 were identified. The codes were then cleared and we started the car. The backfiring was almost nonexistent, however, the SES lite came on again.

(Remember, the backfiring, and inconsistent coloration of the plugs are occuring on the driver side of the engine.)

Code 0300 appeared again. We checked to insure the wires were installed securely, and started the car again. The SES lite came on. Another code P0300!

Jason has a '98 WS6 with MSD wires so we replaced my #1 and #5 wires with his. (Thinking my wires may have been bad) Again we started the car and the SES lite came on. Another code P0300.

I took out the spark plugs and this is what I saw:

#1 plug clean
#3 plug soot
#5 plug clean
#7 plug semi-sootie

My question: Do I have bad coil packs? If so, how can I check them to be sure before replacing it/them? Could something else be causing the misfiring?

Your input is appreciated.

You can swap the #1 & #3 coil packs and see if your misfire moves. Use the current misfire function on ATAP to measure it before and after.

Problem is, I don't have ATAP. I am still hoping someone in the area will read this thread and give me some help. Thanks

Thanks, Ragtop, I did just that. Still, no responses to help out. Thanks anyway.
