I hope this is the right fourm for this question. How can you tell if your car is switching from one to the other? If I'm driving my car down the road the temp hand never moves off 160. If it sets for a few mins it gets up close to 190 or so but as soon as I start moving air around it again it goes right back down. If the car isn't switching am I losing performance? What do I need to do to fix this problem? The car has a stock thermostat.

I probably shouldve read past the first couple of lines like frost said it sounds like your tstat mightve seen better days, I would say start by doing a log to view ECT temps to make sure its not the gauge itself, but like frost said the 98's are "fairly" accurate compared to 99+ so I would lean towards the tstat sticking open. Another thing would be to view when your #1 & #2 fans are coming on depending on ECT temp to see if that might be lending a hand in the situation.
