If you got the kit with the metal t-brace, there is no need to wait more then an hour before reinstalling.
Yeah..Saw those kits...
I used some industrial epoxy ..sets up and dries in like 15 min... It was just O beer 30 ..time for a Miller....took the rest of the day off..
Next day I installed and the new gear worked like a charm...but maybe too good.. The top bump stop broke off causing the headlight to cycle down and back to the up position. No big deal... Took the motor back out real quick...got a small drill in the headlight well..drilled a small hole where the bump stop was ...put a small bolt through the hole with an aluminum sleeve..then a lock nut.. Good as new..
Clay bar'd the car yesterday..Today..buff/wax...
Now if I can motivate my kid to clean up his Camaro...
New Spark plugs, plug wires, new knock sensors, and finally manifold gaskets. I'm thankful that I have a good friend to help me out doing the most difficult portions.
Side markers and 3rd brake light are now tinted. Diff fluid is changed and diff cover painted black.
OK, I have to say if it were mine I would take those chrome tips and have them powder coated black or as close to the color of your rims, as there inst much if any chrome on your car, IMHO

Haven't decided what I'm going to do with the tips just yet. The exhaust will be replace, hopefully this winter. I'm not sure if I want corsa clone tips, or dump it under the hatch....or something else. But I don't like these tips and something will be done about them
I have my (partly completed) car on display at my place of work this week. They had a "maker fair" today and wanted to share with employees what people build at home, so I participated and showcased my car build over the past 4.5 years.
that would be sweet. i was going to attempt and use a pipe cutter to make a groove for the hog ring, but - that scares me - lol GREATLY appreciate your help
Here's a quick description of what i did. Hope it makes sense.
Its a 79-81 Trans an shifter with firebird logo button. The boot is from a 98 grand am gt ( i think all those years are the same) i didn't take pics of the install but i cut the shifter bar (metal only) 1/2 " on each side, then i notched both sides so the new shifter **** tabs will fit correctly into the notch leaving 1/8" of the metal part of the bar above the shifter hole. Make sure not to damage the plastic rod in the middle. I then used a permanent marker to mark on the sides of the shifter that protrudes out inside the installed ****. Remove the **** and grind down where marked on both sides creating a new new notch for the clip. I then cut 1/8" off on each leg of the u clip from the original shifter. I took the new shifter button and trimmed the plastic to fit very snug then I installed the new **** and put the clip inside to hold it from coming off. Pressed on the button and viola. Came together like a champ.
I hope this helps.
I had it in neutral. When in park the button goes higher than in other gears so you may want to trim a little off the plastic tab so it suits a little lower. You'll notice it did at the lowest point in 2 and 1.
I kept the original clip notches in case i for whatever reason go back to stock....not! Lol
so you trimmed the INSIDE of the firebird button to mate with the white plastic shaft, or was it the handle you trimmed to fit the existing metal shaft??
i think I am going to use your directions, using the kit above. i wonder if I grind my white plastic peice to fit that "c-clip" in the video - if that will work.
I think I get your directions. Not that I am a better writer - but is this the gist of it all?
1. remove existing t handle
2. cut off 1/2" of METAL (no plastic)
3. notch both side of metal shaft far enough so 1/8" of shaft sticks up inside new shift handle
4. mark a line at that point to grind a groove for clip
5. trim existing clip to fit.
6. assemble handle to shaft.
7. trim button to fit existing white shaft
8. pop into place and voila

I trimmed the plastic on the shifter plastic rod. you don't want to trim too much off the sides because you want the button to fit on there really snug so it doesn't pop off.
