Any of the ones mentioned will go out because the plastic gear inside strips. Best bet buy one and replace the gear with the brass gear for a long term fix.

Do the brass gear mod, but I would probably avoid buying parts like this off of eBay. I bought window motors once that lasted roughly a month before they were burned up. I replaced them with a set from my local parts store and never looked back. I would, however, recommend checking out RockAuto.com to see if you could find a decent deal there. You'd probably come out better doing that.

Thanks for the replies guys. I might take apart the assembly to see if its just the gears that stripped or the whole motor is bad before I purchase a new one, but for sure probably get two sets of the brass gears set up for driver and passenger side. Any suggestions on where I can get these brass gears?

Advanced Auto has rebuilt motors for under $75 with a limited lifetime warrenty as long as you own the car. I've gotten 2 motors from them in the past and they still work. It's a lot cheaper than the GM motor. If you know what you're doing you can change them in under an hour.
As far as the brass gears, Classic Industries sells them.

Default My headlight gear finally fully stripped out.

I bought another plastic gear for now, since the last one lasted 11 years and 170k. me only issue is installing it? I cant really see the motor by just loooking, and a write up for 98-02 cars would be awesome. anything out there? the bfranker ones are like 10 years old for lt1 cars with pics that are no longer hosted lol.

I just did the 180 temporary fix tonight on one of my headlights and it worked the first up/down, but it started the grinding noise immediately after. It's better now because the grinding only happens when the lights go up (vs before when it'd happen if I used the keyless entry and when it went down), and also the headlight does go up (albeit not all the way) and down when I want it to, but I'm obviously still not satisfied. I'm attaching some youtube videos of what I went through; if someone wouldn't mind letting me know what they think is up and what I should do about it it'd be appreciated.

I think I may have been too rough separating the motor shaft from the up/down arm and damaged some teeth or something, because there is excessive play in the arm of the headlight I did the 180 on, as seen in the video. Due to this play the headlight doesn't come up as far as it should.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFyxS...ature=youtu.be
Here's a video of play just in the motor shaft at this particular spot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIF3q...ature=youtu.be
I tried a few other positions for the motor shaft/arm, and as seen in this video there was much less play than before, but unfortunately in this setup it was backwards and it would make the headlight go up when it should've been going down and vice versa
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMS18...ature=youtu.be
So basically as I see it I have 3 options:
1. When I have more time play around with the motor shaft positioning some more (I may have overshot my 180 degrees leading to a wrong position or something?)
2. Order a new gear and replace the old one
3. Order a new motor entirely (is the play from the gear being damaged or is something more serious damaged in there?)
4. Okay, I guess there's always the extra option of just taking it to a shop and paying someone else to fix it.

Which course of action should I take?

Thanks

Are you saying your test light turned on and off or your headlight? The flip-up motor has it's own wire coming out of the connector. (I'm pretty sure, I haven't even seen my TA for a year and a half now ) I'd check that out and make sure that it's not corroded. Mine was pretty much gone when I got to it

Hopefully people still check this thread frequent enough...
Just installed a brass gear Ive had leftover for years (I bought both gears years ago when I did the passenger side headlight for the typical nylon gear wear issue) on the drivers side light and now the damn motor is strait up not working... Worked fine before, minus having a stripped gear, now nothing. There is no binding, or anything, everything looks good (wires didn't look corroded but after it didn't work first time around I brushed them off anyway, no effect). WTF... What could have changed literally over night for the motor to strait up not work?

Problem here, so I installed the new passenger headlamp motor, but its out of sync or something. The lights turns on when it's suppose to but it flips down when its suppose to flip up and flips up when its suppose to flip down. Any ideas?

Is there a way to buy the large grey connectors NEW? The connectors that are for the lights and motor. Not sure about junk yard dawgin these items. If I get em new I can slap some grease in there and forget about em.
