Default Too Much Power For Stock Driveshaft??

i know the stock 2 piece driveshaft on an 04 gto is the weakest point in the drivetrain. has anyone had experience breaking it? making 400rwhp too much for it. gonna race the car @ the track with street tire. if i change to a drag radial will it break?

Thanks

Anthony

I would have said the stubs are the weak link in the 04 drive train. Maybe you meant the doughnuts on the driveshaft?

You can find one piece shafts, upgrade your CV's and buy better stubs. Racing = less money and broken parts.

yeah on street tires you won't have a prob...........and if you ran with sliucks then you may but i would think you would have a rearend failure before a driveshaft

CV joints and inner stubs are the weakest links, then the driveshaft. I recently replaced my driveshaft, but I raced 3 years with the stock one and I was running nitrous.

+1 . BMR sells a one peice driveshaft and the CV joints etc. Im ordering a set for my new setup because i know the stocker crap wont hold.

If i ever mod my car a Carbon FIber driveshaft will go in right away. Nothing but good things i heard about those, plus people with CF driveshafts in every type of car note a noticeable fuel economy increase, and with a CF driveshaft even if i go to 1200hp i will never have to worry about it lol.

But if you are an 04 definitaly upgrade the stubs as well.

Here is the F'n deal, If you are in a GTO, period, doesn't matter if it is an 04, 05, 06, the stubs/axles are all the same except for the very, very early build 04's. I swapped 06' stubs into my 04' diff. The driveshaft and couplers are smaller on 04's. I ran STOCK 04' drivetrain for 3 years at over 500 hp/tq at the tire, I broke the ring and pinion gear and just barely twisted the stubs with over 150 track passes and at least 3 times that many burnouts and street launches on drag radials. What kills the drive train is WHEEL HOP, do not drive thru the hop unless you have big money on the line or enough money to buy new parts.

Ok then in that case if you have an 04 05 or 06 GTO upgrade the stub and try not to wheel hop.

While interchangeable as an assembly, the half-shafts and CVs are different between '04 and '05/06. The '05/06 parts are a tad bit stronger, although obviously not as strong as the aftermarket parts that are available.

I'd replace the bushings in the rear suspension first, with the rear springs second. Follow that with stubs, then CVs with '05/06 shafts, and then swap in a stronger 2-piece driveshaft.

Gforce1320 parts are better than BMR. I'm running Gforce half shafts, inner stubs, and carbon fiber driveshaft. Gforce (Chris) owns a 9 second 05 GTO, so he knows speed and what holds up.

It depends on if its a manual or not. I put down 430rwhp on mustang dyno in a manual. Im on 275 50 15 MT drag radial and mine snaps driveshaft bolts alot. I have cryoed stubs and axles with a 3.90 gear.

I'd stay away from BMR or Drive shaft shop stuff. They just dont seem to be worth a damn for the GTO. Chris G-Force1320 has a great line of products. So far I'm just running his CF DS and had it up to 165 mph so far and it works great.

I haven't seen much made of it but I believe Chris and BMR are working together nowadays.

Drag bags rule, they are my only "mod" if you can call it that, they do a good job fighting wheel hop, sometimes i still do but thats very rare, when i was stock, well my 05 had bad tires and every time i floored it in first it would hop immensely.
