Thumbs up New Cam / Big Exhaust

Well, several weekends back, over some beers, my buddies and I got together and finally installed the camshaft into Abagail. I have been gathering parts for quite a while and time, has most definitely been something that I have been low on.

Here is a little fun before the cam

Here is a clip after some tuning trying to dial in the idle a bit.

As far as the exhaust setup, here are the details from the headers to the tips:

Kooks 1 7/8" Headers --> transition up to 3.5" (no cats) --> Pypes SS X pipe (3.5") --> Hugs the Driveshaft tunnel to some Dynomax Bullets halfway between the 04 location and the 05/06 location for space constraint reasons --> Hugs the Gforce 9" and kicks up and out the bumper to some 4.5" rolled edge tips.

When I put in the 9", the 2.5" exhaust would not fit without modification, so, I had to drive around open headered for a few weeks. (rarely drive the car) If I was going to pay someone, I might as well get it done exactly the way I want, so I went to summit racing and ordered a universal Pypes SS X pipe kit, and some headman 3" S pipes with the socket to tie onto the kooks headers. I took it down to the local exhaust shop and they were hesitant to touch it without the "specialist".

I convinced them to let me throw the car on the lift and at least let me take some measurements and perhaps they could advise me on what additional parts I should order, and they allowed it. All the employees came over and gawked collectively, and the owner came out and joined. The owner then went and made a phone call to the "specialist". I guess it was his day off, but he was glad when they called him in, I guess I got him out of his hunny do list. Lol

The older gentleman arrived and looked up at Abagail on his lift, and all the parts layed out on the ground under her. He began grabbing pypes and holding them up and measuring, and re-arranging pieces for 5 minutes... then he called me over and told me exactly what he was going to do, and seemed extremely confident. We visited a bit about the plan, and I agreed with his thoughts and he was off to work.

2 Hours Later, I had a fabbed up one-off exhaust setup that Dumped(ish) at the rear diff. All stainless BTW. I also left with the new shopping list required to plumb it the rest of the way out the bumper for the next session. (4 45 deg bends and a 3 ft stick of 3.5" tubing). I already had purchased the tips.

I loved the sound when it was even with the rear diff, (verrrrry deep) but a little too loud, and the exhaust smell was always present and I could smell it on myself after driving anywhere. Plus it looked odd with the holes in the bumper but nothing to fill them.

A couple of weeks later I got it finished out. 1.5 additional hours of labor, and another set of hangers and I was done.

I opted to go big (even though everyone online says that there is no point). I will grow into this exhaust setup, and had it fabbed this way for a reason: This car will be boosted, and everything is now in place, so all I have to do is get the appropriate flanges on the downpipes. But I do not feel like I lost any "drive-ability" or low end torque. I do not believe in back pressure.

Great setup!! Sounds mean! What kind of boost setup you thinking of doing on this goat?

I recently got a steal on a D1sc so I will be procharging her in the not so distant future, and those aes 390s sure have been catching my eye, so I will more than likely add in one of those then max out the D1

Well technically, it would be the passenger since there is an X pipe, And I do not know why it does that, at WOT it evens out, maybe there is something that is slightly better flowing somewhere encouraging the path of least resistance?? IDC though, its baaad. Lol

When you go big you lose most of the benefit at anything short of redline because at 3-4,000 RPM you aren't moving enough air and are losing velocity from the cooling and volume of pipe. I gained a bunch below 3,500 and lost little to nothing up top going smaller. That sucker has to be loud in person now though. I know it's subjective but hows the interior cruise resonance?

Well... That ought to support over 1000hp.

Just a though, but you could get a conical diffuser instead of a sudden jump to 3.5"

I've attached a picture of a 2.5 to 3" diffuser. This particular exhaust is found on a 350z typically only making 250-300whp, with a conical diffuser in the middle allowing a step up from 2.5" duals to 3" piping it outperforms a straight 2.5" exhaust.

The way I did it was the cheapest option that I was aware or, I would love to just get me some 1-7/8 x 3.5" collectors, buuut $$$$.

I hope to have 1k hp eventually, after I get tired of maxing out the D1, I will more than likely step up to a F1c, which this exhaust system wants. I am going to look into the "conical diffuser" option, I did consider enlarging the opening at the 3" ball n socket connection to where the seating surface on the socket is toward the outer edge, making that ~3.25".
