Default 400rwhp. stay sbc, or go LQ/LS?

alright, my ultimate goal is 400rwhp. this is through a ford 8.8 and a big stalled TH350. this is also in an RX7, which is why i really dont need anymore than 400 to make it scoot to my liking. (with 250rwhp right now it already traps 110)

but back to the point of this. im lookin for cost effectiveness, aswell as some gas mileage as i drive this car quite a bit.

basically, will a 383 with solid roller setup and Dart Pro 1 CNC's make my power goals ( i am concerned because i see alot of 406's and such around here with higher compression, bigger cams, and equal heads, barely touching 450)

my other option is to pick up a cheap assembled stock LS/LQ shortblock, toss in say a T-Rex cam, and throw my LS1 heads i have here on and get the Edelbrock carb conversion kit. which i KNOW would net 400+. mounts are only 50 bucks to make it fit. im just afraid to dump 3500 at the car, and not be anywhere near what i want with the sbc.

A 383 with good heads will make 400rwhp easy, might not get the best gas milage though.

just trying to compare some prices and such and long term costs...a heads/cam LQ/LS will put me well into the 450 mark and the bottom end will handle it, and from what i have seen, still get 15mpg with the carb setup. i've been researching both routes since i posted this and it seems like the LQ/LS setup is the more power friendly feasable route being as i can get a shortblock alot cheaper than it would be to put together even a really cheap 383. and they will still hold the power i want.

they are stock heads with 1.72 rockers and 918 springs. nothing special. if i could find someone to buy my Dart Pro 1's it'd really offset the cost for little out of pocket expense to do the conversion.

Oh didnt see u had the darts already makes it a hard one now that I hear that If it was me I would put the dart's to good use with a 350 with some good pistons and rods and a nice cam and trap 120's all day long.

My 383 makes 589hp at the FLYWHEEL with only 9.5:1 compression. Assuming a 20% loss you would need to make 500hp to get your 400 wheel hp. Should be fairly easy to do. If you don;t have the Pro 1's yet I would say go with the new AFR's. Look at their website. they made just under 550 HP with their 195cc heads. should get you where you want to be.

I'd say more than 500 ponies at the flywheel to equal 400 rwhp, depending on the dyno you use on both.

For example, most 500+ flywheel hp SBC combos seem to run in the mid 11s. My Nova puts down 370 rwhp through a TH400 and 3800 stall 10" converter, and at 3500 lbs with me runs 11.40's in killer air (11.60's in summertime), and still knocks down 13 mpg on the highway with 3.73 gears and a Holley 750 HP carb.

Why are you shooting for 400 rwhp? If you are looking to run a particular # at the track, then I can somewhat understand, but remember some combo make great dyno #s but suffer getting to that RPM point. There are plenty of cars I know of making more rwhp than mine at the same (or close to) weight and not as fast.

If you go SBC and want a good chunk of power, go 195cc aluminum heads, single plane intake and 650-750 carb, solid roller cam (or solid can make 400 rwhp too). 3" exhaust is a must too IMHO.

Good luck!

If you already have the dart heads I would stick with the sbc. If you were starting from scratch and found a cheap LQ4 shortblock in good working order, I think I would go that route with a cam, 243 style LS2/LS6 heads, and carb intake set-up.

Although I must admit I am partial to the old school sbc & bbc's.

Just curious, whats the rest of your set-up if you care to share? Sounds like a stout 383 for sure!

I have all of the details posted on here as well as dyno video. Just easier to search for my posts.

Quick Reply: 400rwhp. stay sbc, or go LQ/LS?
