Well said Mark and very true. As J.D. mentioned above, I'am amazed at the misinformation surrounding the GMMG cars.

PS : Hope you and your loved ones got thru those horrible wildfires.

OK, for those lucky enough to own a ZL1, CHECK YOR FACTS! The only thing that made the LS1 A LS6 were a set of 243 heads and an LS6 intake, which all later model LSs came with an LS6 intake from factory. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN LS6 BLOCK! If there is, show me the different casting #s. All of the phase 2 ZLs would have only gotton these heads and maybe headers, carbon fiber air lid,ect.ect. No engine swaps. Why would Matt Murphy exchange the engines in the phase 1s and 2s to only make 100 to 150hp more from factory. Its not that hard to create that kind of hp with an LS1. If you still believe that your phase 2 had an engine swap, the next time you crawl under it, look for scared bolts on your K-member. And for any of you lucky guys that own a phase1 ZL, check the casting # of your heads it should be 241 unless you were lucky enough to have the 243s on from factory and yes this did happen because of the discontinuing of the 241 heads, GM was in the process of converting to the LS2 (243 heads) for the GTO. The # is very visable, its on the passenger side of you engine in the front.

Default ls1 zl1

Thanks for the info camarosss sounds like you know whats going on .I tryed to tell them about the heads .I had a phase 2x which was a ls1 with ls6 heads NUMBER 243 stamped on the heads also. But it was a ls1 with heads not a ls6 block. The guys with zl1 better look a little closer to the engines.I just want to find one not freak everyone out. Thanks for all your help.

All I'm saying is that the Zl1 cars were converted to an LS6 only buy swaping the heads and with the phase 2 cars there were two or three kind of upgrades ( phase 2, phase 2x, phase 2x6 ) this includes all GMMG cars, Anything could have been done to these cars. The only thing the 2002 ZLs have going for them is the history of the original '69 ZLs. These cars were'nt even factoy SS cars (WU8 code) and the rest of the GMMG cars were, excluding the HOTROD camaros. And as for the white ZL that went through Barrett-Jackson last year, it was represented as a C5R car, and it was'nt. So whoever bought that car for 80 plus thousand, lets see it go through again and see what it sells for. I would guess that the present owner would be very disapointed. Yes the phase 3 ZLs should be bringing way over sticker (within reason) but I think it will be a long time before the 1s and 2s bring the big money. Seems to me people are trying to make less of the three more than what they really are.

There were absolutely no LS1 ZL1's...........................and there were absolutely no convertibles. ALL ZL1's were HARDTOPS and the Phase I and Phase II cars had LS6 blocks and the Phase III cars had the C5R race case.

The white car in Illinois that someone mentioned above was a Phase I car that sold at Barrett-Jackson last year for $88,000 and the original sticker was $56,000. This car did nothing but set the price for all ZL1's. I think you will find it hard to acquire one for less than $88,000 now.

If you think you will find a 2002 ZL1 for sticker or less...............good luck. It won't happen. They all go for well above sticker. There are too many guys out there looking for them that know to get one they will have to pay sticker plus many thousands more.

MINE IS ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR SALE AT ANY PRICE.
You would think that someone who owns one of thess cars would know more about them. Call Matt and ask him if your ZL has a LS6 block.

Oh yea your the one that said there was'nt any phase 1 ZLs and just because the GMMG web site says LS6 engine.... that does'nt mean that it has a LS6 block.

The only reason people think the Phase 1 and 2 ZLs are worth a lot of money is because no one has really sold one. Bergers, Tom Henrys, Intimidator SSs and hotrod camaros have sold on ebay, craigs, and other web sites for way under sticker, look at the black Berger that was just on ebay FOUR TIMES and still did'nt sell for $29,000. ( Sticker on this car was over $43,000) This is a perfect GMMG car that could have the same exact set up as a ZL with only one upgrade (243 HEADS AND HEADERS) And its a factory SS car! Don't get me wrong I like the ZLs but I think they are way over rated. Anyway, I could see paying sticker for a ZL but anything over that would be way to much. These cars just have'nt aged enough, and when the new camaro comes out..... I'm afraid they will go down in price even more. So be prepared.

I ment 2 were CONVERTED to automatics. I won't abbreviate anymore.

A cast in 12561168 denotes the LS6 block. Some 01/02 f-bodies came with LS6 blocks (not just GMMG) To confirm if you have one, grab a mirror and flashlight. Open the hood and head over to the driver side and try to see the back of the left head deck, above the transmission flange you will see the casting #.

MorTec, Inc. Chevy Smallblock V-8 Casting Numbers List:
12561168...350...01-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, "LS1", aluminum
Sorry, this casting # is off of a LS1 block. Believe me, GM is NOT going to do anything twice!
Here are some more facts for all off you who need it.
12551358.........99-up...Gen.III, 4.8L or 5.3L, cast iron, truck
12551364...364...98-04...crossbolted cast iron Gen. III, 6.0L, truck
12559378...350...99-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, "LS1", aluminum
12559846...350...98-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, "LS1", aluminum
12560621...350...98-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, "LS1", aluminum
12560626...350...99-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, "LS1", aluminum
12560629...350...99......crossbolted block, Gen.III, "LS1", aluminum
12561168...350...01-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, "LS1", aluminum
12562174...350...98-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, "LS1", aluminum
12568952...364...05-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, 6.0L, aluminum, LS2
12566910...325...04-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, 5.3L, aluminum, SSR truck
12571048...325...04-up...crossbolted block, Gen.III, 5.3L
12573581...364...98-04...crossbolted cast iron, Gen.III, 6.0L, truck
12577184...364...98-04...crossbolted cast iron, Gen.III, 6.0L, truck
12577396.........02-up...Gen.III, 4.8L or 5.3L, cast iron, truck
The LS aluminum block did not change until '04 for the GTO. Then it was bored to a 6.0 from a 350 to a 364 with 243 heads to create a 400hp motor. All of these blocks are the same. GM created the 350 in late 1966 just for the camaro and the same block was used through 1997. GM even got smarter when they started using this block in the Pontiacs for better dependability and dicontinued all of the other blocks. Go to your local dealer and try to order a LS6 block then match the casting # up to these #s..... you will find out that it is the same original LS1 block.

I have enough LS1 cars, I'm getting ready for the new camaro with the LS3s and posibally (maybe its in the works) for a FACTORY BUILT ZL1. Now that would be a high dollar car to keep for retirement.
