Default Raced a 2011 M3 and a 2001 Camaro SS

I met up with a few friends last night to hang out at the local cruising spots. Looked like it was going to be a great night since the weather cleared and there was no rain in the forecast. Early on there were quite a few cars out, but not as many as I had expected. As the night went on, the number of cars decreased drastically and soon there were just a few people hanging out here and there.

I ended up running into a guy I know that has a 2011 BMW M3 coupe, 6-speed. Last time we hung out my car was stock, so there was no real point in racing, but now with my mods I figured I'd hang alot better with his car. He was all for a friendly run and we headed out almost immediately to line 'em up.

His car is 100% stock except for some very minor appearance mods:

My car has a cai, long tube headers, exhaust, underdrive pulley, and a tune:

We each had a passenger and the race was from a 40 mph roll with both cars in 2nd gear. M3 let out at 130 mph.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAaOAd6Bgws

*NOTE* Yes, I realize it was stupid to pass that car going that fast. Got caught up in the moment and it's not something I make a habit of.

I have to say, that M3 is a beautiful car all around. I honestly expected the race to be close down low, with him walking up top. I can't say whether he's a good driver or not since I've never been in the car with him, but afterward he said that he figured it was gonna be a good run so he was shifting for all he had.

A bit later on I was cruising around with the guy who filmed the M3 race for me. He has a 2001 Camaro SS, 6-speed. The only mod on the car is an off road y-pipe.

By this time it was pretty late and there were no other cars around so we figured we'd line our cars up. Neither of us had a passenger, so unfortunately there's no video of the races.

Both races were from 45 mph, with both cars in 2nd gear.

The first race he honked it off and we got a clean start. The cars were neck and neck at first and then I slowly started creeping out on him. By 120 mph I was about a car in front when we let out.

The second race he honked it off again and we hammered it at the same time. It looked like a mirror image of the first race, with us even at first and then me slowly pulling. By 120 I was out a car, but with plenty of road left we stayed in it and I kept pulling. I was able to pull another 1.5 cars and we let out around 140-145 mph with me around 2.5 cars in front.

His car seems to run strong for a basically stock car, and he use to run door to door with another friend's lid/catback WS6 that was a consistent 12.7 @ 109 mph car.

Very fun night, especially considering that we all thought the weekend was gonna be a bust due to weather

Is your 5.0 an auto/manual? what is done to it? If you are stock with his mods he would rape you on a roll race. I know cause I did it with my G8. Friends stock auto I crushed. At the track with both us on DR's I still edged him out. He got a tune and cold air and finally beat me at the track. Then I sprayed it...haha. Manual with 3.73's has a lot better chance.

OP nice kill. Same out come I had vs a new M3.

Thanks guys, it was alot of fun! Winning a race that you thought you were sure to lose is always a good feeling.

Beans, what's a DCT M3?

7-speed dual clutch (paddle shifters). They usually trap a bit more than the manuals. It seemed like that guy was door to door with you but losing ground on shifts, a DCT would be a damn good run.

The DCT definitely runs quicker. It is a small 4.0L V8 with no torque. The DCT gives it 7 ratios with no shift lag. My friend with his DCT M3 ran high 11's with minimal mods, and 119mph traps. (Tune/pipe/pulley). Afterwards, he supercharged it and is now trapping around 130mph. Here is some great video footage of him running some very fast cars. Remember, a 458 Ferrari can run very low 11 second qtr miles. But most importantly, listen to how seamless the power delivery is with the DCT transmission shifts.

ive raced a DCT bone stock though, old friend of mine. The only 2 clean runs we got. First run he went first and i was on the throttle not sure to go or not till i saw his front lift and then i finally got on it, second vid was a even start. No nitrous in either at the time never had it installed. I thought i was going to get handed but suprised. We raced a couple of other times but hard to record and higher the speeds the worse off the M3 was.

Awesome race, that's a kill to be proud of.

I'm not a big fan of autos but listening to your exhaust note there isn't much of a delay. Shifts sound on point.

It shifts real good now. We're still tweaking it here and there, but it's close.

Looks like you should shift a little sooner. Everytime you shifted you pulled on him a little then your pull would stop before the next shift.

Based on my track numbers compared to other cars with the same mods, I feel that it's shifting in a good spot. Him stopping my pull is most likely due to the fact that he makes more power than me once he gets into the peak of his powerband.

Ron, love the sound of your car! Good kill! Was surprised the gap was that large based on numbers I've seen the E92 M3's run but more power to you!

Awesome kill man! Love those E92 M3's. I've been trying so hard to get a run, but I can never get them to play. Seems like my car would do similar to yours as my track times are close. Good races!
