If you read the owners manual it says to only use 91 or higher premium fuel. 87 octane can be used in the event where you can't find premium fuel to get from point A to B but you shouldn't race the car with 87. The low octane timing tables are not designed for running 87 octane. The ECU will default to the lower octane table depending on the amount of spark knock detected but that doesn't mean it's safe for track day. Mystery 87 could be bad enough that the low octane tables do not have enough timing pulled to keep from getting KR. The LT1 is 11:5.1 compression with very high DCR. That is why it gains 25-30whp on E85 because the engine can not even reach MBT on 93 pump.

"If the vehicle has a 6.2L V8 engine, use premium unleaded gasoline meeting ASTM specification D4814 with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. Regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher can be used, but acceleration and fuel economy will be reduced, and an audible knocking noise may be heard. If this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 91 octane or higher as soon as possible. Otherwise, the engine could be damaged."

Doesn’t change the fact that GM was ahead of the curve on this one and knew there would still be people filling up with 87 fuel, so they implemented counter measures in their tuning.

Yea enough measure to where engine damage can still occur. Looks like they are relying on the owner to read and have some competence with owning one of their performance vehicle.

I dont know if id trust that car with 87 in it. My moms 15 SS runs noticeably better on 93 e0 than it even does on 91 e15.
