You’re talking about a modified boosted car that it’s particular power adder is a heat pump at its finest and probably doesn’t have an 1/8th of the time invested in tuning for various octanes and environments that GM does. So if this is true, it’s not surprising in the least. And as for the definition of “lawn mower gas” I’m going to assume you’re referencing 87 octane this time.

The low octane timing tables are not designed for running 87 octane. The ECU will default to the lower octane table depending on the amount of spark knock detected but that doesn't mean it's safe for track day. Mystery 87 could be bad enough that the low octane tables do not have enough timing pulled to keep from getting KR. The LT1 is 11:5.1 compression with very high DCR. That is why it gains 25-30whp on E85 because the engine can not even reach MBT on 93 pump.
GM probably already thought of owners/drivers putting the shittiest 87 octane in the tank long before they hit the car lots. I’m sure they dial them back enough to where you can’t kill an oem unit with 87. You’re just going to get what GM deems as 87 octane performance characteristics.

Taken from a 2016 Camaro SS manual... page 236: https://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/...owners-manual/

"If the vehicle has a 6.2L V8 engine, use premium unleaded gasoline meeting ASTM specification D4814 with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. Regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher can be used, but acceleration and fuel economy will be reduced, and an audible knocking noise may be heard. If this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 91 octane or higher as soon as possible. Otherwise, the engine could be damaged."

Looks like the decision of spirited driving and 87 octane is pretty white and black to me.

To me knowing it's a 11.5 compression engine was the first thing that came to mind to not beat on it with 87 octane. But some people ain't that bright.

Neat.

Doesn’t change the fact that GM was ahead of the curve on this one and knew there would still be people filling up with 87 fuel, so they implemented counter measures in their tuning.

Yea enough measure to where engine damage can still occur. Looks like they are relying on the owner to read and have some competence with owning one of their performance vehicle.

I dont know if id trust that car with 87 in it. My moms 15 SS runs noticeably better on 93 e0 than it even does on 91 e15.

The lq4 in my 2500hd runs better on 89 or 93 vs 87. Especially if the tune is appropriate for the octane
