I have a 93 LT1 Formula and I wanted to hear feedback from people who have installed these. Are they good for a daily driver/Street car? They look weaker than the stock K member so im not sure about it. The only reason I was gonna do it, was to save weight.

Hello,

Some K-members are designed for drag race only and are not recommended for street driving. These items will usually save more weight but again may not be street compatible. UMI offers an LT1 K-member that saves 23lbs over factory and is still 100% streetable. We offer a dual tube center section that offers superior strength as well as oil pan protection which is crucial during street driving. I had one(not UMIs) and it broke on the cross tube connecting the lower A-arms. Not a stable feeling at 70 mph. Stronger than stock? I dont think so. They are nice if you dont have the room for turbos and such. But for DD I didnt think so.

We have never had a K-member fail on the street or during any type of driving.

Go with the UMI Road Race one I don't think anyone makes an aftermarket one that is any stronger than that one.

Regarding the UMI road race dual tube k-member:

Would it be possible to fabricate a "deflector" that would bolt or weld to the k-member underneath the steering rack to protect it and to provide a place for mounting/clamping the hydraulic brake line...?

Could the k-member optionally come with the deflector already welded on (and painted)...?

There's all kinds of junk on the street/freeway that could possibly strike the steering rack, the "deflector" would offer protection.

See attached pic (that I borrowed of UMI's LS1 road race k-member), see the black "thing" I drew in (please excuse my poor drawing skills)... it would cover the bottom of the steering rack, be maybe 3/8 inch thick, be compatible with the routing/layout of the hydraulic lines, provide places to fasten the brake line...

maybe it could have a few holes drilled thru it to shed some weight, and the corners could be rounded.

If you make a one-piece k-member like that I would buy one.

I've got pretty much a complete UMI front cept for the strano sways and gotta say I haven't had an issue to speak of on my DD. I do a minimum of about 24 miles a day on it and have put at least 2k since the install of spirited driving and it runs strong.

Added benefit is that it opens a whole lot of room to work under the car with. I can get at parts from multiple angles that before you just couldn't do with the stock k-member. That alone made it worth the cost for me.

i have the UMI k-member on my car and have had no issues, and i corner and drive the car pretty hard. but non of my suspension or chassis parts are stock
