Default Help! cant get strut apart

i bought new springs for a 99 SS and the rear is done. i started the front and i got the spring and strut assembly off the car. I took the single nut off on top of the strut hoping the rubber piece would just come off but nothing. the upper part is pretty rusted. i've tried everything and it's still pretty solid. once i took the nut off, there's a rubber piece that comes off but the damn strut will not come off the upper rubber piece. is it supposed to just come right off? is there any other bolts that may be holding it together (it's solid) i don't know what to do. i've even loosened the spring compressors hoping the springs will pop off the top rubber but nothing. am i missing something? any advice will help. as of now my only transportation is sitting on jack stands

I think it's called a rubber spring perch that won't come off.

Have you tried using a spring compressor? Maybe if you compress the spring you can pry it off....

I have two struts sitting in my garage that I couldn't get apart either. I'd like to know some tricks for removing seized perches as well.

With the springs securely compressed and contained, soak the perch with some PB blaster and give it a few whacks with a hammer. Some of them get stuck on there pretty good, especially if they've never been apart before.

I had the same problem with mine. They would not come apart with any amount of prying or pounding. I eventually just cut the strut mount in half and bought new ones.

I had the same problem with one of my fronts. Stock DeCarbon shocks with sportlines is just death. Eventually after heating it with a torch, whacking it with a hammer over and over, I just cut the stock shock shaft so I could get at the mount easier. Then cut the mount in half (was buying new ones anyway) to realize that because I had sportlines, all the weight of the car on that side nearly welded the inner mount to the shaft of the shock. I kept the piece in my shop, I should take a picture. 2hrs to get that apart.

My stock front struts were so rusted at the nut on top, I didn't even bother trying to get them apart. I ordered new upper strut mounts and the lower springseat to build a new front spring/strut assy with my new set-up. Much easier that f'ing with the old stuff.
