can someone confirm this is the way these go together?

and do I need to tap the metal piece onto the shock body or leave it loose?

the metal piece you speak of gets tapped onto the body of the shock AFTER the lower spring is installed, otherwise the lower spring seat can't be installed.

Someone should make a new thread on how to put these together with all of the helpful tips and hints along the way of the install process with Koni STR.Ts for the front. There's been quite a few questions lately about how these go together, I don't know if anyone would be willing to do this but I think it wouldn't be a bad idea if there was a quick reference to go to with some good pictures

i'll be doing mine this weekend. i take lots of pics so i don't mind putting it together.

That looks about right - also agree that you need to install the spring perch and lower spring isolator (or whatever it's called) before taping on the cap. In some cases, that isolator may need to have the outer diameter ground a little bit to get it to fit into the lower spring perch.
