What to use to cut springs?
Anyone have any ideas on what I can use to cut my stock springs down? I refuse to torch them and a hacksaw would probably take forever.
Your thoughts appreciated!

I'm not a fan of the torch for springs, but Herb Adams is.... In his chassis book, he shows how to cut them with the "hot wrench" and let them air cool.
I'd use a die grinder if I were doing it at all (I'm not a fan of cut springs...but it can be done).

You could probably try an abrasive blade for a circular saw. I have cut angle iron with them before. Makes lots of sparks but works on the angle iron. Never tried it on springs though.
You can pick them up for a couple of bucks at about any hardware store.

The only grinder type tool I have is a dremel. Would that be burly enough for this sort of job?

I cut my rear springs with a Dremel. I double stacked the discs, which took 2 sets each spring.
Die grinder is the way to go, but my compressor is broke.

Re: What to use to cut springs?
Great information thank you!
I think I'll stop by Sears tonight hehe
Going to start with 1.25 coils off front and 1.25 coils off rears (removing jounce spacers for now and using heater hose)
My car sits pretty high in front with the battery in the trunk, lightweight catchcan and no AC or front bumper support
I think 1.25 coils off all around should provide a decent drop though

Re: What to use to cut springs?
Well, I'm in the process now of cutting 1 1/4 coil out,and the grinder with the cutoff wheel works great!! I made sure and took the spring completly off the shock but couldn't get the bolt off the top with just the hand tools I have. And that was after it wrenched almost all the way off except for like the very end then it got stuck. So I cut the bolt off.Arggg
So now my car is down, waiting on new front shocks
Other then that little mishap, its pretty easy so far
