Default need some advice regarding an AR build/purchase and what to avoid

i'm very familiar with the weapon platform itself, but i'm not familiar with which brands are good or bad these days. i'm looking to buy/build an AR in a few months, and id rather not learn the hard way. is anything even available right now?

what i know i want:
-gas
-16-18" barrell
-M4 buttstock

EDIT: my budget is $1500 including optics. I also changed my mind on the 7.62x39 because of a lot of issues ive heard about. So I'm sticking to the tried&true .308 AR10.

https://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail...CWVMF30816ORCE

i got my G31 from these guys, and they're great.

look at Barnesprecision.com
Andy Is my rifle sponsor and makes amazing products, all parts except magpul furniture are made in his shop. Chances are if you go Colt, Bushmaster, or a few others you will be getting his parts anways. He's only one of 5 shops that make all the parts for an AR style rifle. Also, lifetime warranty and MADE IN AMERICA.

If you're going with a .308, you'll be looking at building an AR-10. From my experience with the AR-10 platform, parts aren't as interchangeable as its AR-15 cousin. Lower receivers can be proprietary and fit only that same brand upper receiver. Check out Armalite, DPMS, Rock River Arms.

If you want to go with a larger caliber, go with a .300 Blackout. Uses a .308 projectile in a chopped down .223/5.56 case. Uses all .223/5.56 parts except for the barrel which makes it much cheaper than building a .308/7.62. For good deals on parts hit up AIM and JSE Surplus. As far as brands, any major supplier will do. Troy, Bravo Company, Spikes, Noveske, Palmetto, etc.

Plus you could stay with the AR-15 platform and parts are cheaper and more plentiful. Well.....cheaper compared to AR-10 parts, haha! AR-15 parts can still cost a pretty penny for the good stuff!

All armalite, DPMS and Rock River parts are made by Barnes Pecision. Andy Barnes makes .308, 5.56, and 300 AAC. If you want a quality build do BPM. better quality than Larue or DD and significantly cheaper.

The 7.62×39 ak round is good all you need is a standard ar15 lower with the correct mag andvthe upper all the parts are the same except the barrel and the bolt. The ammo is alot cheaper than 300blackout and all the others mentioned.

7.62x39 ammo is cheaper, but that is for the foreign steel-cased ammo and tends to be a great deal less consistent than American manufactured rounds, some of that **** is 1970s era soviet surplus..If you bought American 7.62X39 FMJ, it would cost a great deal more, maybe more than 300 AAC blackout...

Silver bear 7.62 has always been good stuff, the Tula stuff is crap, military classic is good stuff also.

Just buy an ak or vz if you want to shoot 7.62x39.

sticking with the AR platform is more important than bumping up to the 7.62. i'd rather just shoot a 5.56 than get an AK.

Then just do that. You will end up with a much cheaper and more reliable gun.

What exactly do you plan on using this for?

Hunting, playing, defense...... All-purpose.

I know i can shoot over 500yds with a 5.56, but i don't like the lack of cavitation.

7.62x39 and 5.56 are not good choices if you are really going to shoot those distances. It sounds like you would be better off with something in .308 like another person mentioned.

The .308 was my first choice for obvious reasons..... Until i saw the price. I can shoot farther than i need to with a 5.56, and pretty close with a 39mm
