Default bunk 160 thermostat.. got to 246 degrees.. damage?

ok well i got a 160 thermostat from a sponsor that will remain nameless for now.. the brand is Hyper Tech 160

i put it in.. topped off the coolant.. 1 gallon.. drove down the street.. i was a good 5-10 miles from anything.. when i noticed 246 degrees!!

find out later the thermostat wasn't opening

so i parked it on the side the road.. walk a good 5 miles.. then call the rescue crew.. sun was killin.. so put back in the stock thermostat.. topped off the coolant again.. put in about 2 gallons.. and its back to normal.. highest it gets now is 198 degrees.. normal driving sits around 196.

question is.. is there anyway to tell if this bunk thermostat did any damage?

Did you reprogram the fans? I have heard that when you do this mod you need to have the fans reprogrammed to come on earlier.

I ran a 160 stat for about three months befor I got my fans programed to turn on at a cooler temp. with no problems. I have a 02 Z that has the dummy Temp. gauge and I never over heated with it as far as the temp gauge read. Your T-stat may be defected. As far as damage to your motor I`m not sure what to say about that. I hope every thing works out for the best.
By the way I probably don`t need to say this, but you did check your coolant level after the install of the T-stat and a cool down period right. I`m sure you did just trying to help figure out why it over heated. Sounds like the new T- stat to me if the stocker worked after re-installing it. EDIT: I forgot you already mentioned that it didn`t open. Dumb *** me......I have a excuse I`m 1 beer short of a 6 pack.LOL

yea.....insom is dead on, his thremo is bunk, i doubt it was the sponsor's fault that sold it to you, probably just a bad thermo from the factory, i'd just get the sponsor to switch it out, or call hypertech and grip them out, plus if it did cause damage, i'd call hypertech and tell them a/b your probs.

246 is kinda iffy, mine soars to 220 at stop lights but during driving sits well below 170, partly b/c i haven't reset the fans to there proper settings.

If its running ok now, and your not losing coolant or have it coming out the exhaust then your probably just fine.

I've heard that sometimes and air/steam pocket will put out an extreme reading.

Its the S cam from HPE. My dyno sheet is on HPE's website. On that one it has 424.8 and Chuck put 375 ish for torque because the reading was fluctuating. That was on stock timing. I had him add a little timing, and a few days later at Slaters i put down 430/382 at a dyno day. All results are SAE corrected.

Turn on your stove in your living quarters...Set your T-stat on the stove and check to see if it opens when it gets to the temp its supposed to open at or to see if it opens at all.
