Default Golf club suggestions and Houston area or internet places to buy...

I was just wondering what a good set of golf clubs are for under $400.
I don't play very much, but I would like a pretty good set for when I do. These off-brand "hand-me-downs" I have are getting pretty old and nasty looking.
Also, what's a good place to go in the Houston area to try clubs out? I plan on trying out a few sets locally and then buying from whoever has the best deal...which brings me to my next question: Are there any online stores that have prices that can't be beat?

Thanks,
Ross

I got my Taylormade Rac OS's new for fairly cheap a few years ago. I got them off of ebay if I remember correctly, but I had done some searching and waited for the right price.

i have some nike slingshots that I bought last year and used for several rounds. They are very forgiving for the beginner/intermediate player. Let me know if your interested, letting them go cheap.

I noticed this thread is 2 months old, but oh well.
you can get some really good deals off ebay. I got a REALLY good deal on some expensive Callaways there.

Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra, Nike, Ping, Titleist, & TaylorMade are pretty much the most popular brand names.
but for under $400 at a retail place, Adams are a good choice.
go to http://www.golfsmith.com
they have some good deals every now & then

Did they change your lie and loft? In other words, did they change the angle of the head of your club?

I did the same thing a few months ago. Got the TM RAC OS2's for $285 brand new. They're not a 2007 model, but a brand new 2005 wholesale kinda deal. I hit them before hand in a store that was asking $500 for them. I really like them.

I had forgotten about this thread. I picked up a new set of 04 Callaway Big Bertha Irons with graphite shafts a few weeks ago. I paid $449 and I believe they were marked down from $699. I purchased them at Golf Galaxy on Bay Area Blvd.

Callaway... excellent choice! I couldn't hit graphite shafts, but question is... do you like them?

Good choice, we need to get the old men out for a round.

I picked up some King Cobra's about 2 months ago, still need time to go swing em!

Wanna try to go play some golf Sunday morning for Father's Day?
It would have to be extremely early to get a tee time!

I hate to admit it, but I haven’t even taken them out of the box yet. I swung some demos at the store and liked them. If their simulator at the store is accurate, I was hitting them straight and for good distance.
This is silly, but I haven’t used this set yet, because I haven’t picked up a bag for them yet. I don’t want to tote my brand new Callaways around in a nasty 7-8 year old bag. I also need to go swing some drivers and see what I like.

i use to play until 12, not sure why i stopped possibly baseball, but have been thinking of playing again. my dad and one of my brothers play almost every weekend and they keep trying to get me back in to it. i have a short temper and little patience when it comes to sports, but nothing compared to my brother. he keeps golf galaxy in business.

What he said. I bought some used hogan apex edge irons from him and had them adjusted for my height as well. They have a net for you to hit into to try out the clubs.
