I do a shitlaod of fab work at work. Something I have noticed is people will weld angle around the perimer of the underside of the table surface. This makes it a biotch to use a c-clamp or a grounding clamp. I know its silly but just my .02. Most of the ones at work are a 3/8 top.

I have two benches, one is 30"x48" and the other is 24"x48". Both use wheels ( two swivels, two rigids ) to help move them around, the frame is 2" square tubing, the underside bracing is 2" angle iron. The 1/8" steel top has worked fine for me, I also use a lock devise so the bench doesn't move around...the top also has holes drilled in it to accept a vise. Here's a few pics.

built my own.....scrap metal...

I built two squares out of 2 X 2 square steel tube as the legs/ends....36" tall....connected these ends with the same 2 X 2 tube to make a "table".....then put a piece of 1/2" thick steel plate on top (~24" X 42")....thing is heavy! I can hammer/bend/etc....anything I want with this table and it stays put......I'll take a pic if someone will post it...

I have seen a slick set-up in a magazine that I'm going to try to replicate. It was a 1/2" steel table that is height adjustable with a long stroke hydraulic jack. You can then either weld sitting or standing.

Why would you put the vice right in the middle of the table?

I do Alot of fabrication from suspension to, stainless/alum tanks to equipment repair, whatever.... I used to have a 1/4" top table, 3x5' and it warped like crazy, braced with 2" box tube, so I went to the drawing board, and designed a table with 8" I beams, and a 4x8' x 1 1/8" thick steel plate top. It is awesome for anything, you can jump on the corner, and it doesnt budge, It is on 4 1000 lb casters and has four adjustable screw down leveling plates. Total weight is just under 2000 lbs.

Do I expect you to need something like that, no, but If you ever use that table as a jig, or to clamp a fixture that might warp down, or even beat on it, do not go with a 1/4" top, it wont last long. 1/2" minimum.

A friend has one, that works great, 1/2" plate, 4' by 8' and the support structure (something like 4by 4 box or C) is 8-10" inside the perimiter of the table, allowing for easy use of clamps around the outside. All mounted on super heavy duty locking casters, with a vice in the one corner.
