Using a lin. 3200 welder? Anyone use flux to weld up subframes?

The 3200 is going to struggle a bit, you'll want a thicker wire and flux core wouldn't hurt -- it'll get more heat into the weld than using gas. Just crank it all the way up, you'll need every last amp that little guy can produce

Been practicing with my 3200 on 1/8 angle & it just doesn't penetrate on gas. Going back to to flux core tomorrow to see if it will do it.

Is a stick welder better suited for this job?

Tried .035 flux core this afternoon, cranked to power up all the way & about 4 wire speed. The good news is after a little trail & error I was able to make the weld penetrate all the way thru a 1/8th butt weld. The bad news is there is no way, without a heck of alot of practice I'm gonna feel good about attaching any chassis components to my car. Welding something like SFCs or a rollbar (the project I had in mind) means I can't easily see how good the weld is since the part is now attached & I can't look at the back side to see if there's enough penetration. Also, the flux wire spatters little ***** o' steel all over the surrounding area, not nearly as nice looking as the mig welds.

Try a friend with a bigger welder or a bodyshop. I don't know that I would trust many welding shops with my car. They often are not very careful. My parrents own a welding shop too. I say find a bodyshop because they have an apprecation for the car.My dad also owned a Bodyshop for 16 yrs.
