What is the actual cost ?
At this link http://www.saccourt.ca.gov/traffic/fine-breakdown.aspx it says it can be 178.00 ? I'm sure someone here has actual experience with this.

I'm sure that fine is imposed if you don't correct the offense. When you get the ticket, the box for correctable should be checked. If you correct the ticket and show the front license plate properly, then the total fine for correction I believe is $25.

Yep, 25 bucks for a fix-it-ticket. Have the CHP sign it off than wait in line at the court to show proof and pay the fine. Than do what I did after I paid it, I took the plate off in the court parking lot. I believe having no front plate is a secondary offence meaning they have to pull you over for something else. I got pulled over for tinted windows than he walked around my car and saw I didn't have a front plate.
