And be sure to include the year of your car so we can discern the difference between the new rules and the new Star shops.

^Your model year determines if you go to a Star shop?

1999 and before will go to a normal tailpipe testing shop.

STAR is the pilot program that monitors specific stations for compliance.

"How are vehicles selected for STAR smog check?

The State of California uses the following three strategies to determine whether a vehicle is STAR station designated or not:

1. Gross polluters (vehicles which have failed a previous smog inspection with very high emission readings)

2. High Emitter Profile vehicles. These are vehicle types designated by the Bureau of Automotive Repair as having high chances of failing the smog inspection.

3. A random sample of all vehicles registered in California and being driven on public roadways.

If your vehicle has been selected to undergo a STAR smog check don't be alarmed. Simply locate a convenient STAR certified smog station and proceed with the inspection. The smog technician conducting the test can inform you of any serious issues. There are several hundred STAR smog stations throughout California and you can find one in your area using our STAR Smog Station Locator."

Hopefully this becomes a sticky. I am curious to see with what setups people can pass with. That way I know exactly what heads/cam setup I can use on my car and if they can get away with tunes.

No, 1999 & before are not excluded from the STAR stations. I own a /87 turbo Buick (bone stock, of course, and I got my notice about the 12-28-2012 to go visit a STAR station. My plates are due in 03-03-2013.
Even though Star stations are supposed to be the newest in validation processes, keep in mind that most will be a tad different, & that the technician can use a sniffer if he chooses to do so.
Good luck to everybody & Happy New Year from your friendly CARB, BAR, & PRK.

I think that we need to come up with something pretty quick.

I'll be pissed if I need to go to a Star station, my nearest one is 80 miles away! Are these stations only in certain counties? My renewal notice should be here in a couple months.

I have a 222/226 custom grind cam on a 114 lsa and pass smog with flying colors when my manifolds and cats are on. I have a 94 camaro with an ls6 swap and have passed the smog referee. Have also ran the times in my Sig with this set up but with longtubes

Passed the smog referee on 10/12/2010 and just passed smog again at a local test only shop on 9/16/2012. So I'm not really worried about this at all.

^ You passed smog with an ls6 swap? I thought that you could only swap motors from your vehicle's same style years?

You are correct. I used a vin from the sellers fbody instead of his vette . But I know what the motor is haha and claim as an ls6 swap

He mentioned in his post that he had it referee'd in 2010 for the LS swap.

And technically it doesn't have to be the same style and year. But if I used the vin from a zo6, I would have to have the front pulley assembly as a vette, fuel system and evap system.

There are people that are doing successful swaps passing the referee on rx7 cars with ls1 swaps. But they just have to have a donor car to swap EVERYTHING over to pass.

In my case it wasn't as hard

I have a '95 Impala SS and always have to take it to a Test Only station. I'm guessing I'll have to take it to a Star station in November 2014.

I've got a '87 turbo Buick and I've been having to go to a "Test Only" station for the last 6 or 8 years.
I just received my Registration Renal and it states STAR smog station only.
If your Impy was a "High Emitter Profile" then yes you will be off to a STAR smog station at your next smog session.

Subscribed. There has been a lot of speculation about this but no real useful info for us who mod our cars. At least I haven't found any. I've been waiting for the details to decide weather I should get a bigger cam and longtubes on my 06 gto.

Depends on the year.
<1999 will be treated the same as they are now.

00-03 are not tested at the tail pipe, only checked for OBD2 errors.

04+ later vehicles will have their bin checksum compared to the original factory one. My guess is if it is different then the car will be flagged to under go other test methods.

ya but if your a test only witch is star smog it's visual meaning no exhaust mods like headers and so forth....for fbodys means hours and hours of labor breaking your back to swap out the headers...I don't know about u guys but I don't got pit stop crew members to do this stuff for me
