Default 2002 z28 tick. Should I still buy?

***updates on page 3..

I posted in the what it's worth section but replies are too slow. I'm kind of in a hurry. Sorry!!

I'm looking at a 2002 z28 35th anniversary m6. 120k miles. Clean title but was hit in a parking lot and fixed completely and professionally. Has carfax noting the accident and him being the 3rd owner. The car is in good condition, paint still shines but a couple small dings and scratches. I'd rate it an 8. Interior is near perfect, 9. The clutch, brakes, and tires were replaced less than 20k miles. Some minor tune up was done as well; plugs, wires.. The motor has a tick but not a knock. I'm not a mechanic so I don't know what to do about that. It sounds almost like a GDI gas direct injected engine.

What should I pay????

Thank you all.

Do you really want to buy a car with a problem like this? Base your offer on the worst case, bad cam or major engine overhaul. It could be something as simple as a bent push rod, but do you want to take that chance? Good, low mileage cars pop up for sale here with no problems. My 2000 Z28 has 113 thou on it and the small problems are starting to crop up. Do yourself a favor and don't rush into a high mileage car with an unknown sound coming from the engine.

Here's a video of the car after 3 minutes from cold start.

http://youtu.be/DPfAIz7Fu7g

Cold start. Can't really hear in the beginning. It's more noticeable when car starts to warm up. It is most audible when car is fully warmed.
-More noise near the end of video.

http://youtu.be/LTedk13rdZA

I'm kind of leaning towards an exhaust leak since it's most audible underneath. It's hard to pinpoint the noise...

I think I would pass if I were you. It could very well be an exhaust leak, or a bent pushrod, but why risk it. Keep shopping around. You'll find something else. Just my .02 cents.

It's hard to find an 02 for 6500$ z28 here with higher mileage and less maintenance go for 7500$ plus. It's ridiculous. If someone can tell me that it's nothing to worry about I don't mind taking the risk. What's the worse it can be right? The owner said it's been like that since the first day he'd owned it.

I understand your concern though Kevin. I'm still open for other deals.

2 things. 1. LSx motors are very noisy. Is this your first? If so, be prepared to worry constantly about the noises even a healthy one makes compared to other cars.

2. Agreed, if you want it, go for it, if not, keep looking. You can get really good cars in the 6s.. VERY good cars in the 10s even here on the forums. This isn't the only fish out there.

My engine makes a similar noise. what I can tell, sounds like valvetrain noise which is what mine's doing (among other things) and it's been just fine driving besides that. I am however replacing my motor though.. so.. just keep that in mind heh.

Also, you made me cringe pulling on the CC cable to rev it, rev by the big metal piece! won't hurt anything either way, I'm just being a dork.

Lol my finger wasn't strong enough and had to use the almighty thumb.

I had 98 z28 with 189k miles and that motor sounded quiet as f even with an exhaust. The motor didn't vibrate or shake. This one has a little shake. I understand it can be the motor mounts but still.. I was jus expecting most newer cars to outshine my previous 98z with super highmileage.

Ls-1's seem to have very sensitive valvetrains. After listening... maybe a lifter, pushrod or a damaged rocker. $6500 is 5 or 6 thousand less than some of the low mileage ones advertised here, I can see why you would be interested.

yea.. the term "worn out" comes to mind. It reminds me of my car's engine which I am replacing. If you don't wanna replace it, I would probably skip this one. I paid $4500 for my car. I've put $2k into it so far, in hindsight the repairs it needed made it a bad deal, but.. I still enjoy drivnig it despite it's NUMEROUS flaws.

I haven't been able to hear the noise while in the engine compartment, but in my 01 Z28 I can hear almost the exact same rapid tickticktick...tickticktick...tickticktick noise while driving. It's really faint and I can't hear it inside the car; only when the window is down and the sound is bouncing off a nearby curb or wall as I'm driving. It's not piston slap, and it's intermittent...doesn't happen all the time...comes and goes randomly. I would love to hear more feedback on this issue not only to help the OP with his decision but to help me isolate and fix the problem with my car. I began noticing it about a week after I had replaced the driver's side valve cover gasket. Didn't touch any of the valvetrain parts during the gasket change though, so I doubt it was from that.

for beung a 02 the car has higher miles than I think it should. Id say whoever owned it drove the **** out of it, always expect it to have been beaten on. You say whats the worst it could be? how about a new motor, ($1500)+ thats used and you still could be buying other peoples garbage. So that $6500 dollar car just turned into $8000+. Give it time something will come your way thats a good deal. My opinion is pass on it and find a lower mileage and more sound of a car. Just my .02

Almost sounds like a lifter but is their any chance the gasket for the AIR fittings are blown or leaking?

I am about 80% sure its a lifter. I just replaced 2 lifters in my friends 01 (both on cyl 5). Sounds exactly the same in the vid. It could be as simple as replacing the bad lifter(s). But I also agree: pass if you can. Be patient, you can always find a good deal even though I know you are excited! (I scored a 99 z for 4800 with 104k last feb!)
