Default 6 speed drag racers inside

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some feedback from the experienced 6 speed drag crowd.

I'm trying to decide on a drag tire setup for my new project. These will be going on my 99 formula. To give you a quick rundown, I'm running a TSP 402, eventually a nitrous outlet plate kit, 9" will full Spohn suspension, etc. I'm going to order the 15" Billet specialties street lite set, and I'm thinking of going with a 275/60 MT ET radial. The car is a 6 speed with a spec clutch. Will this tire be sufficient for this type of setup or should I just go right to the ET drag?

Thanks,
Andrew

If you know alot about suspension then you can make a drag radial hook with a stick. Its just a little easier to hook/work with a bias ply slick.

I use a 26X11.50 QTP. I've never used a drag radial on my drag set up because of what I've read on here. Get a bias ply and be done.

Its a LOT easier to use a bias ply slick tire for a stick car. They are more forgiving to suspension and recover better from wheel sping. I have used both bias ply hands down for a stick car

Yeah, you guys are pretty much confirming my thoughts on going with a bias ply. Guess I'll pick up another set of rims and put a fat ET drag on there. What sizes are the rest of you running? I definitely want to go to a 28 - I'm assuming at 28 x 10.5 will get it done.

X2 on that..

Gear choice, Speed, RPM is everything when it comes to tire size!

What RPM you plan to leave at?

Bias Ply for the six speed, Id look into some double adjustable rear shocks as well to keep the Tires from uloading after the shock of the clutch drop..

If your on a Radial and it starts to spin (unload) its harder to recover once it starts!

28in Bias Ply is goin on my turd before the spring hits!

I'd definately go with a 28" Stiffwall ET Drag. I'm running 28x10.5 ET Drags on Billet Streetlites and they work awsome. I started off with 275/50 M/T DRs and I couldn't get them to hook at all then went to 275/60 M/T DRs and they were still very inconsistent. I finally swapped to my current 28" ET Drags and the car launches great now. I've cut a best 60' of 1.53 but I sould be in the 1.4x this year with a few tweaks. Oh btw I'm running 4.30s also.

Doh, should have mentioned that. Sorry. Car is running a 9" with 410s and has a TSP 402 setup for the bottle. My best guess would be mid 120s on motor and somewhere mid 130s on the hit.

28" ET Drag here w/ a 4.10 rear, almost impossible to break them loose even with only a quick clean off, and that's comming out with a 5.5-6k clutch drop.

A good drag bias ply tire. Stay away from drag radials. Need the soft side wall. Less shock on the drive train.

Well, sounds like I'll be rolling on a 28" Drag w/ a stiff sidewall. Thanks fellas, wish me luck at the track in a few weeks.

Ive always wondered why a stiff side wall over a soft sidewall or vice versa. Whats the reasoning behind it? Im using a soft sidewall on my car right now and it hooks awesome with 750rwhp (6speed).

A stiff side wall slick is ok. I was refering to a drag radial that doesnt give any wrinkle.

the radial is a lot of shock on the drivetrain. mainly in your case your output shaft in the tranny. you have a 9" so you are ok there.

a stiff sidewall SLICK is what he wants, a stiff sidewall radial is a whole other story. it can work but its a **** ton of work and very hard on parts.

mostly for the weights of our vehicles. they are just so heavy is can get loopy at the end of the track and 140+ mph. plus the soft wont react as quickly.

Thanks for the input fellas, much appreciated.

What size exactly are you all running? 28 x 10.5 or 28 x 11.5? What kind of modifications (out of the standard) should I expect to get them to fit? The car had adjustable coilovers so I can play with ride height, and I'm sure I'll have to "adjust" the wheel wells/lips.
