Id like to know as well. When i try turning mine down it gets louder and then eventually starts going down if i keep turning it. I just use the steering wheel controls now, but it still bugs me. Mine only has 12k miles too.

Yep, my wife's car had the exact same problem around 40-45k miles. Sometimes if you held the **** in a certain direction while turning it, it would seem to work better. We just always used the steering wheel controls. I finally replaced the stock radio with a Kenwood a few months ago.

This is caused by dirt build-up in the switch. The fix is to pull off the **** and use a spray straw to spray electrical contact cleaner down the hole behind the ****. Turn it around and around for a while to clean it up and you'll be good as new.

BTW - I've used contact cleaner in the past with success, however it isn't safe for plastics. Using MAF cleaner may be a better choice, but I haven't seen anyone use it for this yet. (MAF cleaner is a plastic-safe electrical contact cleaner.) Regardless, if you get any over spray of the contact cleaner, you'll want to clean that up right away.

There have been threads on this before, but I was able to open up one switch and confirm it. There were little specs of crap on the contacts. I wanted to take a picture of it, but didn't have a good enough camera set up. (It took a magnifying glass just to do the inspection.)

The contact cleaner works amazingly well.
