Whats the best radar detecter?
I live in oklahoma and today on my way to work...I passed a Highway patrol and the speed limit was 65 and I passed him going 65...well he slowed down and he paced me and he pulled me over for going 68 in a 65 and I got a g*damn ticket...how stupid is that? So Im looking for a good radar that isnt too expensive but it isnt too cheap either...does anyone know of any?

Doesn't sound like a radar detector would have helped you in that situation. The cop may not have even had a radar gun. They are able to clock your speed accurately by pacing you with their calibrated speedometers.
Also sounds like he had a fight with his wife or something if he was in a bad enough mood to give anyone a ticket for only 3 over. You could fight the ticket by saying that you saw him and were being very careful to stay at the speed limit with him behind you so your speedometer must not be as accurate as his. A sympathetic judge will probably let it go.

Look on the ticket to see how he clocked you. If by pacing, go to court, ask when the last time his speedometer was calibrated. Ask if it was calibrated after your ticket. If you want to spend $50 or so, go get yours calibrated - most are off by that much. Either way, go to court (it's not that bad). 3 over is insane.
btw, in my opinion, V1

Pacing really isn't about average speed, it's about a cop maintaining a set distance between his cruiser and your car then noting what speed his speedometer shows. If you speed up (even momentarily) and he manages to stay with you so that his speed matches yours then he can ticket you for even a short time above the speed limit.
If a cop pulls in behind you and you slow down fast enough that he can't match his speed to yours before you're under the speed limit then he can't ticket you. However, he will have seen you slamming on the brakes and you can bet you will be getting his special attention for a while.
VASCAR is a system that relies on average speed over a distance. VASCAR stands for Visual Average Speed Computer And Recorder. It is what those lines painted across the highway at regualr intervals are for. An officer in a plane times how long it takes for your car to travel from one line to the next and calculates your average speed over that distance. If you were speeding he radios to patrol cars on the road in front of you to pull you over.

I don't mean to hijack the thread (but it seems it's already been answered in several other places), but I'm a little confused on the VASCAR thing. Sounds like a "speed trap" that's not allowed by police in CA. However, sounds like it's exactly how speed is enforced by aircraft. Anyone shed any further light on this for me?

Hey, if you want some great information and user opinions on radar detectors (and like to drive fast!), stop over on the Radar Detector forum in my signature.
I'm a mod over there, and we could definitely use a few more "hot blonde chicks" on the forum

I have a Passport 8500 x50 and I love it, it's 100 or so dollars cheaper than the v1 but it doesn't have the arrows. Getting anything other than a v1 or passport or some say the bel is just a waste of money because you'll end up upgrading later.

I have the Valentine One as they not only offer continual upgrades to your V1 for a small price (compared to throwing away an obsolete one and buying new), but it also has more usable features and the ability to hide the tell-tale sign to others you have a radar detector by hiding the signal lights seen from behind one's car...
It is hidden due to the optional concealed display... If you're like me and travel frequently, some states outlaw the use of radar detectors...thus this concealed display is placed next to my TCS switch. It eliminates the signals from the head unit on your visor/ window/ headliner and sends it to a concealed display below.
Just check out their site: http://www.valentine1.com/home.asp
I think you'll be pleased... I am as it has saved me from a lot of tickets...but remember...no matter what detector you buy...not one can truely guarantee you will never get a ticket. Unless you have a radar scrambler...and they are illegal...if you get caught...
Hope this helps some...

I have a Passport 8500 that has warned me many times and saved me from the pigs. Of course I tend to speed more now that I have a detector. Valentines are great also but arrows werent worth $100 to me. I mean really, I never give a **** if the cop is behind me, in front, or to the side. I hear an alarm.... I snap the brakes. You would be stupid to look for the source before slowing down.
The one good thing about V1 is the upgrade policy. Passport X50 has the ability to flash new software, but does not offer a hardware upgrade.
The last ticket I got (70 in 45 zone) was by laser. The Passport never gave me any warning at all. The cop told me that he had busted many, many drivers with radar detectors that never had a laser warning.
PS You got a ticket 'cause you are a Hot Blond Chick. Duh.

Actually looks to me like the V1 is the oldest and has the fewest number of features of the three tested.
To summarize the article....
Best overall performance............BEL Pro RX65
Best instant-on performance.......Escort Passport 8500 X50
Best POP-mode performance.......BEL Pro RX65
Best windshield mount...............Valentine One
Best visual displays...................BEL Pro RX65
Best audible alerts....................Escort Passport 8500 X50
Best laser performance..............Valentine One
Best price/performance ratio.......Escort Passport 8500 X50
"The Valentine One is a highly sensitive radar detector--good enough that we declared it the winner of our 2000 Automobile Magazine shootout--but it's no longer top dog. The world has changed since it was designed in 1991. The Apple IIsi also was hot stuff that year but Apple knew better than to continue peddling the same box. They replaced it with smaller, faster, user-friendlier models packed with advanced features.
Valentine and their V1 seem locked in a time warp. Even the owner manual reflects 1980s thinking, replete with wildly outdated statements such as “X-band [is] most common for moving and stationary [radar].” Huh? 47 of the 50 state highway patrols abandoned it years ago and the remaining three are dumping theirs as quickly as they wear out, replacing them in the meantime with the latest in Ka-band moving radar.
With an increasingly wide gap in the V1’s level of sophistication compared to modern designs--not to mention a minimalist feature set, quirky ergonomics, an exceptionally chatty nature and stiff price tag--the competition has clearly passed it by. Small wonder that Valentine’s market share continues to shrink, down to an estimated 0.6 percent and falling. Time for a new model, guys."
