Don’t Give Up Hope On a New Colorado ZR2!

Late last week, at the Cleveland Auto Show, Chevrolet showed off to the world a new trim option for their popular Colorado mid-size pickup truck.

Called the Trail Boss, this extension of the Z71 package adds some additional items to make life on the trail a little bit easier. But is the Trail Boss the watered-down ZR2 that we’re actually going to get? No!

Sources inside General Motors have told us that the public reception of the Colorado ZR2 has been excellent. The truck has been received well in the media.

Even the people we talk to inside GM about it are excited about the truck and the possibility of it going into production.

So, if everyone seems to want the truck built, why hasn’t General Motors announced it’ll go into production?

When asked, we get the canned response of, “we don’t comment on future product plans.” But I have a theory on why we haven’t heard anything yet.

The 2.8L Duramax diesel that is featured in the ZR2 hasn’t been released yet in the normal Colorado or Canyon yet.

Sources tell me that they are prepared to meet diesel demand, and can quickly increase output if sales beat their projections. But how well the public responds to the diesel is still a bit of an unknown.

Now this is purely speculation, but if the diesel doesn’t sell well in the Colorado or Canyon, it’d make it financially more difficult to offer it in the ZR2. Or, if it sells very well they don’t want to cannibalize sales of the regular truck with the diesel to make engines for a ZR2 until production is increased to compensate.

I don’t think we’ll see ZR2 news until after the regular diesel hits the market. In the meantime, keep letting GM know you want to see the truck.
