Default noobie question -- styrofoam in engine bay

i was fixing my halos today and just playin around with the car and i went to see what the car would look like if i pulled off the plastic grill and first i couldn't get it off, there is clips in the middle that keep it in there but behind it there is grey styrofoam. what is that all about and is it there for a reason? there is a bunch of it too? im guessing this is normal b/c i dont see why anyone would put that **** in there?

sorry if this is a dumb question, just really curious. thanks

Behind the plastic grill, its not wide open (which it sounds like thats what you are expecting). When you remove the grill there is another one behind it that is molded to the nose (all one piece). The word "Camaro" is also imprinted in this area. The billet grill just goes in front of this.

Check out the black Camaro in this thread to see what I am talking about:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/appearance-detailing/467207-black-ss-grille-delete.html

Check out the black Camaro in post #3 to see through the billet grill:
Check out the black Camaro in post #8 to see the !grill mod with wire mesh:
Check out the black Camaro in post #9 to see the Wings West grill with wire mesh:

BTW, the proper way to remove the grill is to undo the fasteners from behind, but it sounds like most people just yank it so that is pops off.

Also, most people leave the styrofoam right where it is. Its there for a reason and unless you either leave the grill off or use one with equally large openings its not visible. If any of it is visible through your replacement grill, you can paint it flat black to make it less visible.

Here are some more threads on the subject:

There are plenty more threads in this subject. All you had to do was an "Advanced Search" for "grill" the the "Apearance & Detailing" section.

I just put a SLP SS grille on yesterday, it looks so much better. Anyways, what your going to want to do is pull outward along the top edge until the 3 nuts on it's plastic anchor studs disengage, you can stick a flathead into it to pop them out easier.

here's mine. look's WAY better than the cheap black plastic. i bought the gutter mesh from the Depot, painted it white, cut it to size, and stuck them in. I used 1/2" staples for a staple gun to pin the mesh into the styrofoam. Through dozens of washes, neither side has yet to even move. here's a picture.

yeah, you need to take the black one off to get a billet grill on anyways. thats what i did, drove without the stock grill for a few weeks, found a good deal on a billet grill locally, and bought that. i like it both ways. i kinda like it more with the billet grill. at night, you can see the stock color behind the grill (assuming you dont paint it black, which many people do) and it looks badass.
