This is Yank's Convertor selector guide and is pretty good:

http://www.converter.cc/converter_choice_guide.htm

You can also call the sponsors like TCI and Yank and get their opinions.

Good luck with it and I am sure you will get better feedback from the guys in this area

Talking

factory gears on A4 are either 2.73 or 3.23, iirc! [option code GU5 on the label on your driver's door]...

If you're gonna upgrade gears.. do 3.73s

As for TC, go with Vig 3200 or 3500.. I'd go with 3200 [that's what I'm planning to do..] I also suggest doing Sub Frame Connectors [SFCs]

If it is your daily driver stay way from 3.73's.................. I have them and HATE them..................... 2500rpm's @70 mph.... if your door code is a GU3 then you have 2.73's, if you have GU5 then you have 3.23's.... stick with the gears you have and go with a stall above 3000. You will regret it if you go to small of a stall. A stall really wakes a A4 car up. TCI's Super Street Fighter 3500 stall. Or go with a 3800. It makes your exhaust note more pranounced so be ready for that..... Do you have any local friends with A4 F-Bods that have stalls in them....?? ride with them and ask them to let you take it for a quick spin so u know what to expect.
Thats just my .02 though.

A4 = Automatic and has 4 gears [D-3-2-1]
MN6 = Manual and has 6 gears

Look carefully at the larger sticker on the door.. it will def. have a GUx code there.. it's a lil hard to find the first time.. don't worry it's there!!

It could have 3.42 gears but they're probably aftermarket if you were told so.. i.e. the previous owner upgraded the gears maybe

I like the stock 3.23 for daily driver in my car. If you choose a large converter, the gains from a gear swap will most likely be rather small.

Go large on the converter! If you go large now down the road when you have more mods and want to launch at a higher rpm you will be ready! And going large now will not hurt your times.....it will only make you 60' time better! My first converter was my 3800 and now that i'm looking at a heads and cam swap i wish i would have went with at least a 4000

I agree, go large. I went to a 3600 (#7 pump) on my vig from a 2800. Now Im thinking that I should have gone bigger. Don't go over 3800 if you intend to spray.

3600 would be a good converter for you. it will still get out ot the whole well, and will be better for gas than a 4000. also know that vigi's stall higher than they are rated. i've never had any problems out of mine.

Default i am still looking for my GU code!!!

Hello blown GTX, Man i have checked the doors two or three times now and the largest sticker on the door is a parts identification and then there is 2 below that i have looked at all of them up and down and the only GU_ on the whole door is a GU2 and that is in the middle of all the codes on the identification sticker. I am pretty sure the gear is stock as of now but the person that told me 3.42 thought that 3.42 was a factory gear. thanks

GU2 is 2.73 gears. So if you are around 75mph at 2krpm you have 2.73s.

i have basically the same goals for my car as you- i'd like to see low 12's or 12.00 without juice but i do plan on eventually spraying it. i am very happy with the ssf3500 that i have right now.

you definetly do not need gears. you DO need drag radials though, or at the very least really good tires (probably more $ than drag radials) your car will become worthless (wheel spin) below like 40mph.

*** if you have 2.73's at wide open throttle you will shift into 2nd gear around 50mph and to 3rd gear around 90-93mph (at least from what my speedo says). 3.23's will be out of 2nd gear before 80mph. even if you do have 2.73's you don't NEED gears, but it can be annoying at times. im concidering gears for my car but i really love it on the highway, like the trip to and from the track. 90mph is like 2500rpms or so

I always read that 3.73's will hurt the daily driver aspect but are good gears for the track. I am not sure what the deal but mine are still great for daily driving, barely notice any difference if any and I still stay about the same rpm at 70mph. Yes I did change my gear ratio on my predator.

If your not sure about the GU number on the door, then call your vin number to the GM parts dept, they will be able to tell you what the gear is.

my car is running 75 mph at 2000 rpm and it is also shifting from 2nd to 3rd at 91 or 92 mph so i am asuming that it is 2.73 since it is matching perfect to the following info!!! since it is a 2.73 would a 3.42 help it out a little also! along with a 3500 or 3600 stall???

I had the same question but I have a 4:10 gear. I only 1/8th mile the car and can live with it on the street. But is it absolutely necessary to tune the trans after this mod? I will have this done next weekend, ssf3500. I rode in one with this converter and it was good on the street and was killer on the launch.
