In case anyone has questions about HP loss when swapping a 4L80E for a 4L60E, this should answer that question . . .

ok since its 2014 does anyone know if they made a slip yoke already made the length for the stock driveshaft for 4l80e and stock 10bolt ? Or what yoke would you recommend and what do I cut on it? thanks..

Question. Will the length be an issue if its a 4x4? And the transfer case should bolt right up right? Instead of a new converter cant I just get a new flywheel for a 4l80 and a 350 because I need a new one anyway. And I have a 98 with a vortec and I was thinking about the PCM issue. If I do the black box to 411 swap would it confuse it too much to program it to the truck and swap it over to a 4l80?

HI
Very long thread here. Im sorry I havnt read all of it.
But as far as I read, it was all about the engine mounted 4L60E trans? How about the 2004 corvette 4L60E? As I understand its strengthened a lot and came close to the 4L80E trans?

The thing is that I really want transbreake in mine. Is it possible in a stock trans and a stock engine? The driveline is in a glassbody ford -34 on a C5 chassis. 2400 pounds more or less. (not finished yet)

No, not at all close to the 80E trans.

There are transbrakes available for the 4L60E but I don't recommend it on a bone stock transmission, the engine doesn't matter. You will also need a deep pan for the transbrake as well since the brake manifold takes up a fair amount of space and a 60E transbrake becomes quite costly.

Ok.
Just rumors Ive heard on forums that they built up the 60E trans for 03-04.

Ok, then trans brake wont suit me at all, as I have no space for a deeper pan.
Ill go for a line lock solenoid to the front wheels instead.

Thanks for clearing things up.

Default Swap Help

I have a 91 S10 that has a tune port injected (TPI) LT1 and 4L60E out of an early model Vette. The motor is well built and will also have a 150 shot on it shortly.

I lost the trans last night and was tossing around the idea of putting in a 4L80E. Will the stock computer operate the transmission and what all would I need to get for it to work. I am not talking about crossmembers, etc., just the items needed to make the trans operate correctly.

Seeing a great deal on a 1992 unit out of a diesel truck. Anything stopping me from using that core?

In the meantime I'm still lost as to what exactly makes it necessary/recommended to get a custom converter... GenIII engines came with 4L80s in trucks... is the bolt pattern on the 5.7 cranksahft differnent from that of a 6.0?? If not what's to stop me from simply getting a flexplate for a 4L80e application so I can use a 4L80e converter?

As for the '92 core, nothing should stop you from using that. In fact, there is a little bit of misinformation in the original post. Early model cores are preferable for 4L80E swaps, they have a slightly beefier OD roller clutch and the lube modifications GM made to the late model units is nothing particularly noteworthy in terms of power capacity. Anyone reading this, do not hesitate to use an early model core despite what the OP says.

As for the flexplate, you don't necessarily need a custom converter. Honestly, if you're doing a 4L80E swap into your car, I don't see why you would keep the stock flexplate and create the risk, but other than that, it's not necessarily necessary.

For example, the converters we build can be used with either a 4L60E or a 4L80E flexplate bolt pattern

There's a few other things that aren't entirely correct in the OP but the post may become a bit long winded

Great info; thank you.
This is an LS1 retrofit into a truck and we wanted to use "truck rated" parts (turbo 500hp/500tq est.) Would a stock flexplate from a 4L80e application be any better than the F-body 4L60e unit?

Great post. Was wondering a few things if you can answer them. This swap is in my future for my 1500 sierra.
1) Having to cut the ears off the bell housing
2) you will have to take a die grinder and cut a small square section from the trans tunnel bracing towards the rear of the trans.

You put this in a truck or a car? Im guessing a car correct? I just googled 4L60e convert to 4L80E and I found this blog so bear with me. I didnt see were you stated what you did the swap in. THANKS!

Yes, the ears come off when putting the trans into an fbody car. A truck should have more room, since I believe they some come from the factory with 80e's.

I have a 01 lq4 with a red blue wiring harness. I am looking at placing a 4l80e in place of the 4l60E. I work at a salvage yard so i can get the other vss plug and wire it in and i think i can use the same wiring change on the harness at the trans used for the red green harness. My question is is this correct. Can i still do this or does anyone know. I dont see a need in having to spend alot of money on a custom converter when i can use a stock 6.0 flywheel from a truck that had a 6.0 in it if i am going to use the 4l60e trans.
