Possible group buy opportunity for some V1 carbon fiber parts?
Ok, so as in the other thread LSPowered has a friend who has the ability to make carbon fiber pieces. I have talked with him a little about it, and wanted to kick the idea around with you guys.
Why, no one makes carbon fiber parts for the V1 has always been a mystery to me. Hopefully now that they are coming down in price, the younger generation will catch on and create more of a demand for such pieces! Go ricers! With that said I myself am interested in the pieces for mainly weight reduction and looks! I think a clear coated carbon fiber hood on any color car looks awesome, just my opinion. But our cars are heavy, and I'm dreaming to be able to get it down to about 3500 pounds or less with all fluids. May be a pipe dream but with a little here a little there it will add up.
Now to brass tax, the parts I have in mind are a hood and trunk lid. Not sure how much weight can be lost at the hood (hopefully at least 10 pounds doubtful) but I'm sure that a carbon fiber trunk lid for the V would lose some substantial weight. Plus, I don't plan on putting on a carbon fiber trunk without a matching hood? That would look stupid. At any rate for the hood and trunk lid, a 1000$ each was kicked around thus far. I’m sure with more interest and commitment we could get that down lower. Maybe not so much for the trunk, as that would be a detailed piece to make but for a stock form hood I had the 750 mark in mind. With any other variation (cowl etc.) obviously costing more.
At this point it is all talk and nothing has been set into motion. Also feel free to mention any other parts you had in mind which you’d like to see in carbon fiber. Again, this is just a feeler!

Biggest problem to run into is going to be the molds and the costs associated with the tooling. I've been trying for quite some time now since building my car.
The parts that were made back in the day were run in the Grand-Am series and lacked some of the fit/finish and amenities that most would want for their street car.
That being said, if something gets put together, I'm in for a hood, decklid, all 4 doors and fenders should it come to fruition...

Lot of poor and/or unrealistic ideas thus far. Some people clearly just want the carbon fiber look. If that's you, go buy some 3M Di-noc and wrap your existing part.
If you want to achieve weight loss quick, start with a Deka ETX20L and ReallyLightStuff aluminum bracket. That's 20 lbs gone for $150.
A good carbon fiber application would be the rear seatback. It's covered by cloth, so looks don't matter, and the stock unit weighs around 60 lbs. I'd pay about $150 for a replacement bracket if I had to do the work of installing it.
Another is the shock tower. Plenty of people want an LS2 shock tower. It weighs 5-8 lbs, so you have an opportunity to both lighten it up and stiffen it up.
The first person to build a ram-air scoop for the CTS-V is going to make bank.
But the real winner will be the guy who comes up with a turnkey solution involving reupholstering R505 racing seats to look stock and installing the seat heaters and a 5-point racing harness. Although the total cost will be about $1400, the delta weight will be over 200 lbs, with strong bolsters to lock you in and better leather.

Trunk lid and rear doors. I already got rid of my rear seat a long time ago and there's little to no weight savings to be had with the hood (although a vented hood similar to the VR I would be interested in).

You'd be paying about $2000 to have those parts painted. You know that, right?

You need a roll bar for the 5 point harnesses and race seats (probably my next big money mod). Most seats have removable skins though and you can pick up after market seat heaters for around $100 last I checked. I would think it shouldn't be too hard to find which stock seat harness wires to attach them to to integrate into the stock button system.
$2k to paint two doors? (I'd probably just leave the decklid as is).
