Watch Out
I got royally fucked on Friday night. Watch out for the Ministry of the Environment being out on the prowl.
Keep you eyes open: if you see something that looks like a 'ride program' near a local car hangout area, turn around ASAP. They are looking for any missing (or tampered with) emissions devices.
This praticular one was in Ottawa, on Maryvale road.
From another forum I post on:
"I finally got the chance to go out on Friday night and do a datalog with it in hopes to finish up my tune. I was on my way to a local hang-out spot. I came up to what looked like a 'ride program' (for drunk drivers). No problem, or so I thought. Until I saw two Ricers with their hoods up on the side of the road. By then it was too late to pull a U-turn.
I had a wideband cable out the window, cables-galore for HP tuners and the LM2, and an open laptop with VE tables etc. The police demanded I park behind the civic. The Ministry of the Environment had people out who tore car apart (figureatively). $365 for no EGR, and $110 for no front license plate. I got off easier than I should have.
If I'm caught with any emissions devices missing, I lose my license plates."

Ouch...the licence plate ticket is easy to get out of...seriously, I already evaded one this year...
How could they tell you were missing the egr? I know they don't know every car, and not every car has an egr...what stops you from saying the car doesnt have it? Or could they see the blockoff plates?
Did they go through your tune files on the laptop?
You said you had no EGR, so did you end up loosing your plates?

How did you get out of the license plate one?
The guy from the MOE was a licensed mechanic. On the driver side fender well of the car there is a sticker which says what the vehicle is (should be) equipped with. Something like: SFI/EGR/AIR/HO2S and a couple others. There is also a diagram showing where the EGR should be. Clearly, it wasn't there. He didn't notice the block-offs.
They didn't go through the files. They really wouldn't have seen anything interesting though. I was not logging vehicle speed, which is really the only thing that they could potentially give me a ticket for.
If I'm pulled over again and it's not fixed, I will lose them (apparently).

I was thinking that maybe if they went through the hp tuner files, they may see if you intentionally turned off certain emissions equiptment. For instance, you can turn off the EGR and still have it intact if you know what I mean...
And, I never knew we had stickers that said what emissions equiptment we had on the car...What would happen if you were to remove all the stickers that said anything about emissions?

Thanks for the PM!
Thankfully they didn't. There are definitely some things that I wouldn't want them to see. I've thought about doing something to the sticker. Keep in mind that 2001+ cars don't have EGR...

I'll send you a PM with how I got out, never know who watches these boards...

Long Tube headers, dual catted Y. No post-cat O2 sensors though.
They looked under the car long enough to see that there were cats.
The guy in front of me in a Civic did not have a cat, although he welded the heat shield from his previous cat onto his exhaust. That worked for him.

Honestly, it sucks what happened to you big time. However, living in Canada and knowing very well that they go after these types of things, why bother to take your EGR off man?
Realisticaly speaking, how much whp did you gain by removing your EGR or any other gains for that matter? You could have taken that $365 dollars you got charged with and got a used LS6 intake manifold, gained some hp AND stayed legit
All im saying is that its a loosing battle. Theres no way to fight this up here.

That is the suck. But Merivale Rd is a big ricer hangout area. Wonder if they are trolling near Hazeldean Mall on Tuesday nights, or Place D'Orleans on Wednesday nights?
But, it is this reason I forced Kooks to make me the correct emissions header for my 2000. Took an extra 2 months to get them installed, but I won't have to worry about crap like this.
Your engine looks real nice though.

I've heard they were near some other car shows. It really wouldn't surprise me if they did Kanata or Orleans.
I really wish I had Kooks.
Thanks for the compliment. I'm still not sure how I'm going to run a catch can and EGR...
Have I ever met you before?

I don't think we've met before. You may have seen my car around town....blue Z28, license plate same as my username. I haven't been to any of the "cruise nights" in a couple years - having little ones around can do that.
