Default How to tell if your ss is a "slp" car

Ok guys I hope this isnt a stupid question but my buddy has an ss and we arent sure if it is an actual SLP SS or if the guy he bought it from is full of crap. It has an SLP SS fiberglass ram air hood on it "that dont line up right" and SLP lid and SLP exhaust. And also bilstien shocks and I think there Bilstien springs cuz there like dark blue and also Boxed sub frame connectors. Oh and Its a Hugger Orange one 6speed 99. Thanks in advance!

Look in the Drivers Side Door jamb and locate the build codes, you want to find the code "WU8". That was the code for a real SS.

SLP makes SS. GM makes Z28 and if someone wants SS made they send it to SLP.

All SS with the RPO code WU8 are real SS, wether they are SLP SS or GM SS depends on if they also have the Y2Y code. During some years (1998-2001*) vehicle that had SLP Options added as well, had the Y2Y code. Otherwise they only had the WU8 code. My 2001 Camaro SS is a GM SS, it has the WU8 code but no Y2Y code ... so it recieved no SLP extra Options. GM makes the SS and installed the 17" wheels and a temp hood and spoiler, but SLP added the SS hood and spoiler.

If your SS has the Y2Y code on the driver side door panel sticker, look on the passenger's side door for another sticker. It will be the SLP Options installed on the vehicle.

*In 2002 to avoid having cars not being properly optioned, which was the case amny times with SLP Options, GM mandated that all WU8 optioned Camaros have the Y2Y code as well.

It is a SS since it has the WU8 Code.

Yes, it is an SS since it has the WU8 code. All SS cars are Z28s with a WU8 code. The car didn't come with any SLP options since it doesn't have the Y2Y code or SLP sticker, just the basic SS package.

My 2000 had WU8 and Y2Y, but no Y2Y options... just some food for thought.

All SS's went to SLP for fitting of there Hoods and Muffler and intake. Just as all Firehawks went to SLP, and all WS6's went to ASC...There were options that could be added at SLP hence the SLP sticker on the door. But even without SLP add ons it still went to SLP.

SLP was pretty bad about throwing in keychains and other chotchke as Y2Y "options". Might explain a Y2Y SS without any of the real SLP content (catback, Bilstein suspension, etc).

Pretty sure that by the time the Camaro was done, SLP was doing the hood, spoiler, and any Y2Y options. The 32mm front swaybar, 17" rims, and exhaust all went on at Ste. Therese as part of normal production.

Amazing how the content of the SS shrank from start to finish. By the time they were done it was definately an appearance package.

The reason for WU8 (SS) and Z28 RPO codes is because the Z28 is a suspension package for V8 models. Coincidentily it is also the name of the model. All SS's had to start with the V8 Suspension, hence the Z28 RPO code.

Did you verify that with SLP? Could be the sticker was removed. When Y2Y was checked off, the person ordering (wether it was a customer or dealer) could check off a slew of additional items ... possibly none at all.

Leather was an option.
